Feyenoord earned a 5-2 victory over SC Cambuur in the Eredivisie after play was halted for thirty minutes due to fireworks thrown from the away section.
Fireworks halt play in Leeuwarden
In the third round of the Eredivisie season, Feyenoord secured a 5-2 away victory against SC Cambuur at the Kooi Stadion. The match was halted in the twelfth minute when travelling Feyenoord supporters ignited fireworks in the away section. Burning flares and pyrotechnics landed on the playing field and in the home stands, causing Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst to run clear as a device exploded near his goal area. Police confirmed that three spectators on the stands sustained injuries and required medical attention. Referee Danny Makkelie led the teams into the dressing rooms for a stoppage that lasted roughly thirty minutes before play was cleared to resume.
Makkelie explained the decision to continue the match following consultations with officials:
We had to check whether a player was hit, but that was not the case. I did see supporters were hit and I believe they are being treated. I hope they are doing well. But according to the protocol, a match is not abandoned for that, no matter how terrible it is that they were hit. This is what was agreed.
First-half dominance from Feyenoord
Prior to the stoppage, newly promoted Cambuur had opened the match aggressively, but the momentum shifted entirely to the Rotterdam club once play restarted. Feyenoord broke the deadlock in the seventeenth minute when Ayase Ueda contested Cambuur goalkeeper Thijs Jansen for the ball, allowing Gjivai Zechiãl to steer the loose rebound into an empty net following a video review. In the 25th minute, captain Luciano Valente received a pass from Gaoussou Diarra inside the penalty area, turned, and finished to make it 2-0. Mika Mármol extended the lead in the 42nd minute when his delivery slipped past Jansen into the net. In first-half stoppage time, Ueda converted a penalty awarded for a foul in the box, giving Feyenoord a 4-0 advantage at the interval.

Disciplinary consequences for Feyenoord
The victory occurred under the eyes of Feyenoord general director Robert Eenhoorn and technical director Dévy Rigaux, who observed the disorder from the stands. The Royal Dutch Football Association disciplinary committee is expected to review the incident and consider penalties for the fireworks discharged into the crowd. The disorder arrives as Feyenoord prepare for the upcoming Champions League group stage draw, where the club will discover four away destinations. Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst rotated his squad during the second half, handing a club debut to Javi López while resting starting players ahead of the closing days of the summer transfer window.
