A passenger ferry on the Rio-Antirrio route pulled a 70-year-old woman from the water after she was caught in strong currents while swimming near Rio on Sunday. The 'Antonios M.' crew, acting on Coast Guard orders, brought her safely ashore and medical staff confirmed she is in good health.
Incident at Rio
On Sunday around 1 p.m., a 70-year-old woman was swimming in the sea off Rio, a coastal area near the Peloponnese side of the Corinthian Gulf. Strong currents quickly pulled her away from the shore, leaving her in a state of danger. Her distress was noticed during the regular crossing of a passenger ferry on the Rio-Antirrio line.
Swift rescue by ferry crew
The ferry 'Antonios M.', which was operating on its scheduled route, received instructions from the Hellenic Coast Guard to approach the woman. The crew reacted immediately, diverting toward her position and executing a close-range pickup. They managed to pull her out of the water and bring her on board safely.
Safe return and medical check
The rescued woman was transported by the ferry back to the coast at Rio. Once ashore, she received first aid and was examined by doctors. According to reports, she was found to be in good health and did not require hospitalization.
