Ferrovial to invest over €1bn in Madrid data centre campus with capacity above 100 MW
Ferrovial is investing over €1,000 million in a data centre campus in Alcobendas (Madrid) with a capacity above 100 MW. The first phase, delivering 60 MW and 50 permanent jobs, has been fast-tracked as a Project of Special Interest by the Madrid regional government.
The announcement
The Community of Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso revealed the Ferrovial project during a meeting with the newspaper 20minutos, part of its “El pulso de nuestras comunidades” series. Later that morning, the regional economy councillor was scheduled to meet with Ferrovial executives to formalise the deal. Ayuso stressed that the investment reinforces the region’s digital standing.
It is a further step in consolidating the Community of Madrid as the digital benchmark of southern Europe.
Project scope and timeline
The campus in Alcobendas, north of Madrid, will have a total capacity exceeding 100 megawatts (MW) and total investment above EUR 1,000 million. In its first phase, the site will deliver 60 MW of IT load and create 50 direct permanent jobs. The regional government has already issued a land movement licence, enabling construction to begin. The project has also secured favourable reports covering urban planning, digital strategy and the energy transition.
Just the first phase will support the creation of around fifty direct jobs; it has already been approved by our Investment Accelerator and declared a Project of Special Interest.
Fast-track regional backing
The first phase has been declared a Project of Special Interest by Madrid’s Investment Accelerator, a body set up in 2023 to fast-track approvals for large infrastructure developments. Since its inception, the Accelerator has designated 17 projects as of special interest, attracting combined investment of almost EUR 9,000 million and more than 5,000 jobs. The bulk of these are data processing centres (11), followed by biopharmaceutical (4), renewable energy (1) and logistics (1). Four further initiatives are currently under evaluation.

Madrid’s digital ambitions
During the event, Ayuso emphasised that the Madrid region hosts the highest concentration of high-technology firms and data centres in Spain, and ranks second in Europe for the number of professionals employed in the sector. She also highlighted the regional government’s Virtual Health Card, which she said is “saving many lives and detecting many diseases at an early stage.”
