Motorcyclist dies in Gdynia collision after car changes lanes on Morska Street
A 34-year-old motorcyclist died on 1 October 2026 following a collision with a Volkswagen Passat at the intersection of Morska and Kcyńska streets in Gdynia.
Collision at Morska and Kcyńska
On Thursday, 1 October 2026, a fatal traffic collision occurred at the intersection of Morska and Kcyńska streets in Gdynia around 16:00. Emergency services received reports of the crash shortly after 16:00 and dispatched rescue units and police patrols to the scene. An 18-year-old woman driving a Volkswagen Passat was moving from the left lane to the middle lane when her vehicle collided with an oncoming motorcycle. Paramedics and rescue personnel conducted prolonged resuscitation on the 34-year-old motorcyclist on the road. Despite their medical efforts, the motorcyclist died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Officers immediately began efforts to establish the victim's identity while emergency personnel worked on the road.
Driver testing and forensic procedures
Following the crash, police officers secured the scene and initiated standard investigative steps for fatal road incidents. Breathalyzer tests conducted at the site confirmed that the 18-year-old driver was sober at the time of the collision. Officers subsequently escorted her to a hospital for mandatory blood sampling to screen for psychoactive substances, a standard procedural requirement in fatal collisions. Jolanta Grunert from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Gdynia confirmed the preliminary findings regarding the collision.
Officers initially established that the female driver of the Volkswagen Passat, while changing lanes from left to middle, most likely did not notice the oncoming motorcyclist and a collision occurred. The 18-year-old driver was sober, but blood was drawn from her for toxicological tests for the presence of psychoactive substances.
Under the instructions of the supervising prosecutor, authorities transferred the deceased motorcyclist to the Department of Forensic Medicine in Gdańsk for an autopsy.
Reconstruction and speed analysis
Police investigators and forensic specialists compiled photographic records and gathered physical evidence to reconstruct the precise circumstances of the crash. While traffic regulations establish that vehicles continuing straight within their lane have right-of-way, investigators indicated that the operating speeds of both vehicles will play a central role in determining responsibility. Forensic experts will evaluate the technical condition of both vehicles alongside tire marks and debris left on the roadway. Investigators are also compiling witness statements from drivers who witnessed the event. The formal inquiry into the accident remains ongoing.

Citywide traffic disruption
The collision led to substantial road congestion across Gdynia during the late afternoon rush hour. Police closed a section of Morska Street to secure the site for emergency responders and forensic investigators. Vehicle queues stretched back from Cisowa in the direction of the city center and along routes leading to the Tricity bypass from Wejherowo. Uniformed officers directed vehicles manually at key junctions and urged drivers to use alternative routes through neighbouring districts. Police officials also issued appeals urging all road users in the vicinity to exercise extreme caution and follow directions from emergency personnel. The traffic backups along the corridor began to dissolve after 19:00 as investigators finished documenting the scene and cleared the road.
