Discovery and evacuation at Olimp

Tourists on the northern beach of the Romanian Black Sea resort of Olimp discovered washed-up wreckage from a drone around 07:00 on Wednesday, 26 August. The debris washed ashore near the Steaua de Mare Olimp resort, outside the perimeter of protocol villas managed by RAAPPS. Eyewitnesses placed emergency calls to 112, prompting police, gendarmerie units, and lifeguards to cordon off the area. Authorities established a safety perimeter spanning roughly 500 meters and evacuated visitors from the waterfront to prevent injuries.

Controlled detonation and technical analysis

Specialized military bomb disposal engineers deployed to the location to examine the debris. Technical inspection confirmed that one of the retrieved components carried an active explosive charge, while a second structural piece found on the sand contained no hazardous materials. Before neutralizing the ordnance, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations sent a RO-Alert emergency broadcast to residents and tourists in Olimp, advising them to maintain a safe distance while noting the procedure posed no danger to the public. Military engineers then carried out a controlled detonation of the explosive fragment in the sea water. Interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță confirmed the intervention during the operation.

Debris across the Black Sea coast

Strong storms and heavy wave action across the Black Sea have driven multiple pieces of military debris toward the Romanian shoreline. The Olimp detonation occurred less than 24 hours after another drone part was discovered on Tuesday evening near the Constanța Casino. In that incident, pedestrians spotted a structural piece trapped between concrete tetrapods along the promenade. Emergency response teams retrieved the object for examination, and preliminary assessments indicated it carried no explosive payload. Romanian authorities have not yet announced the formal origin or model of the retrieved drone fragments.

Airspace incursions and border monitoring

The coastal discoveries coincide with heightened activity along Romania's border and maritime perimeter. Official figures from the Ministry of National Defence indicate that 24 of the 42 unauthorized foreign drone intrusions into Romanian airspace recorded since 2023 occurred during the first eight months of 2026. Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure near the Romanian frontier total 121 since the start of the war, including 55 launched in 2026 and 22 in the last two months. Romanian Air Force and NATO allied fighter aircraft conducted 78 Air Policing scramble missions since 2023, with 43 of those takeoffs taking place in 2026.
