Wildfire near Karystos on Evia spreads rapidly, contained by evening after overnight battle

Fire breaks out in southern Evia

A wildfire ignited around midday Saturday in a forested area between Almyropotamos and Mesochoria, in the municipality of Karystos on the island of Evia. Strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly, and within hours it had grown to approximately 500 stremmata (0.5 square kilometres). The blaze threatened the villages of Mesochoria and Raptaioi, prompting authorities to issue an emergency alert via the 112 system, calling on residents to stay alert and follow official instructions.

Firefighting response

Initially, 70 firefighters with 20 vehicles and three ground teams were deployed, supported by six water-dropping aircraft and three helicopters. By afternoon, the force had been reinforced to 120 firefighters, five ground teams from the 4th, 10th and 20th EMODE units, and 35 vehicles. A total of nine aircraft and seven helicopters operated in the area, with one helicopter dedicated to coordination. Water tankers and earth-moving machinery from the Region of Sterea Ellada also assisted.

Difficult conditions

Gusty winds hampered efforts throughout the operation, creating multiple spot fires and new ignition points. Aerial drops faced added obstacles from high-voltage power lines and wind turbines in the area. Around 6 p.m. local time, the situation deteriorated, and Mesochori was directly threatened, with the fire coming within less than a kilometre of the first houses. Many residents chose not to evacuate despite the 112 message, staying to assist.

Overnight containment and flare-ups

By Saturday evening, the fire was largely contained, but scattered hotspots persisted. Overnight, firefighters remained on high alert as continuous small flare-ups occurred due to the persistent wind. A volunteer told local outlet evima that the flare-ups were small and firefighters were able to catch them quickly. Personnel stayed on site through the night, and the full firefighting force remains deployed on Sunday morning to prevent any resurgence.
