Espanyol draw 1-1 with ten-man Sevilla after Marcos Fernandez scores in 98th minute

Gonzalez reaches century mark at RCDE Stadium

Espanyol secured a 1-1 draw against Sevilla at the RCDE Stadium in La Liga on Sunday evening. The match represented the 100th official fixture in charge of Espanyol for 47-year-old manager Manolo Gonzalez. The coach took the helm on 12 March 2024 after previously coaching the reserve team for 26 matches under former sporting director Fran Garagarza. Gonzalez, who secured top-flight promotion on the night of Sant Joan in 2024 and subsequently earned consecutive league permanences, retained core squad members including Javi Puado, Leandro Cabrera, and Omar El Hilali through ownership changes from Chen Yansheng to Alan Pace. The contest also marked the first time sporting director Monchi faced his former club Sevilla in an official match since departing the Andalusian side.

Tight opening half at RCDE Stadium

Espanyol entered the fixture seeking a reaction following two consecutive league defeats. Gonzalez adjusted his starting lineup by restoring Cabrera to central defence following a suspension, while Moscardo started ahead of Urko in midfield. Sevilla coach Luis Garcia Plaza made three alterations from their previous match against Atletico Madrid, starting Giorgi Kochorashvili alongside Lucien Agoume in midfield and fielding Chidera Ejuke on the wing. An audience of 30,000 spectators saw an early opportunity in the third minute when Javi Hernandez forced a save from Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos following a free kick conceded by Kochorashvili. Sevilla responded with attempts from Calatrava in the 28th minute, Dolan near halftime, and Ejuke, while Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic navigated a moment of danger in his penalty area before the break.

Second-half dismissal and disallowed goal

The dynamic shifted ten minutes into the second half when referee Sesma Espinosa showed a direct red card to Sevilla central defender Arouna Sangante in the 55th minute for bringing down Roberto as the last defender. The decision drew heavy protests from the visitors after television replays showed the defender made contact with the ball, but video assistant referee Trujillo Suarez upheld the dismissal. Espanyol introduced substitute Marcos Fernandez in the 58th minute and briefly thought they took the lead in the 61st minute when El Hilali converted a loose ball after a punched clearance from Vlachodimos. However, the video assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside, maintaining the deadlock as Sevilla reorganized with ten players.

Stassin strike cancelled out in stoppage time

Garcia Plaza had introduced Belgian forward Stassin and Fofana as a double substitution in the 53rd minute to provide attacking threat. Stassin saw an initial one-on-one effort saved by Dmitrovic in the 66th minute before breaking the deadlock in the 84th minute with a half-volley from a flicked-on throw-in on his club debut. Espanyol brought on debutant Bryan Zaragoza alongside Riedel and Hartman to mount a late offensive push. Vlachodimos denied both Fernandez and Zaragoza with a double save in the 94th minute. In the 98th minute, Fernandez directed a header against the crossbar and immediately slotted home the rebound to salvage a point in the final sequence.
