Bellingham breaks deadlock as England beat Panama 2-0 to top Group L
A goal and an assist from Jude Bellingham helped England overcome a resilient Panama 2-0 at MetLife Stadium, securing first place in Group L and a theoretically easier path in the knockout rounds.
Pre-match tension
England entered their final Group L match already qualified but needing a win to top the group. A goalless draw against Ghana in the previous round had raised concerns about their attacking fluency under Thomas Tuchel. Panama, already eliminated after narrow losses to Ghana and Croatia, had nothing to lose and promised a stubborn defensive setup. Tuchel warned that the Central Americans would be difficult to break down, a prediction that held true for much of the first half.
First-half stalemate
Under a heavy downpour at MetLife Stadium, England dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances. Rashford and Saka probed the flanks, while Panama goalkeeper Mosquera made early saves to deny the forwards. The Panamanians, compact and disciplined, occasionally threatened on the counter, with Jose Luiz Rodriguez firing just wide and Pickford forced into a sharp stop. The first 45 minutes ended with frustration growing among the English faithful.
Bellingham magic
The deadlock broke in the 58th minute. Bukayo Saka swung in a corner and Jude Bellingham, despite being tightly marked, produced an acrobatic flick to send the ball into the net. The MetLife Stadium erupted. Five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider, driving down the left before crossing for Harry Kane to power a header past Mosquera. Kane’s finish extended his record as England’s all-time top scorer in World Cup finals.

Celebrations and confidence
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the travelling supporters, who belted out "Football's Coming Home" and Oasis’s "Wonderwall". The victory ensures England finish top of Group L and will travel to Atlanta for a round-of-16 clash on July 1.
It was a difficult win. Panama created many problems for us and we had to be patient. Bellingham made the difference when we needed it most.
I feel responsibility, but also joy. I always want to help the team, whether scoring or assisting. Today we managed to unlock a difficult match and that gives us confidence for what's ahead.
After a nervous group stage, the performance offered a timely boost as England look ahead to the knockout phase.
