Kanye West Falls Asleep During Testimony in Malibu Villa Trial

The court trial of Kanye West regarding his former property in California's Malibu took an unusual turn when the plaintiff himself repeatedly fell asleep while testifying. Reports from the Los Angeles courtroom, published on March 6 and 7, describe that the rapper and fashion designer, known as Ye, had clear difficulties maintaining alertness. Witnesses reported that West dozed off, his eyes closing, forcing him to jolt awake. His testimony was also accompanied by numerous claims of memory lapses. When asked about details of the villa's purchase and its condition upon handover, the artist repeatedly answered that he could not recall crucial facts. Such behavior could negatively impact the credibility of his testimony in the eyes of the jury. Court cases involving celebrities over luxury properties in exclusive Los Angeles neighborhoods like Malibu or Beverly Hills are relatively common. They often concern hidden structural defects, building permit issues, or – as in this case – a glaring discrepancy between the actual condition and the description in the sales contract. Transaction values reach tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. The day before West's testimony, on March 5, his wife, Bianca Censori, took the stand. Her account, in contrast to her husband's vague testimony, was very specific. Censori described the beachfront villa as being in a catastrophic state. According to her testimony, the house was completely empty, lacking not only furniture and artworks but also basic kitchen appliances, interior doors, shutters, and even some parts of the installations. Her testimony forms a key part of West's legal team's argument, which claims the previous owner knowingly concealed the vast scope of renovation and furnishing work needed to make the property habitable. The trial concerns a lawsuit filed by West, in which he accuses the villa's seller of fraud. The plaintiff claims he paid tens of millions of dollars for a property presented as a luxurious, fully-equipped residence, while in reality he received a „shell„ of a building requiring enormous financial investment. West's behavior in the courtroom – both falling asleep and the lack of precise answers – introduces a new, unforeseen element into this high-stakes property case.
