Ecuador needs a win against already-qualified Germany to keep its World Cup 2026 dream alive
Ecuador faces a must-win clash against group leaders Germany in the final round of Group E, while Curazao and Ivory Coast play a simultaneous decider for the other qualification spot.
The Group E equation
Germany has already secured first place in Group E after beating Curazao 7-1 and Ivory Coast 2-1. The four-time world champions can finish with a perfect nine points. Ecuador, in contrast, has just one point from a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curazao. To stay in contention for a place in the round of 32, the South Americans must defeat Germany. A draw or a loss would leave them with no more than two points, a total that almost certainly eliminates them. The concurrent match between Curazao and Ivory Coast in Philadelphia adds a second layer of tension. Ivory Coast has three points and controls its own destiny: a win guarantees progression. A draw could open the door for Ecuador if the Ecuadorians beat Germany and edge ahead on goal difference. Curazao, on one point after a 7-1 drubbing by Germany and the draw with Ecuador, also needs a victory to have any chance.
Ecuador’s scoring drought
Ecuador has yet to score in the tournament despite 16 attempts on target, a number that approaches the worst goal‑free streak recorded at a World Cup since 1966. Only France in 2002, eliminated as defending champion, fired more shots (18) without finding the net. The Ecuadorians struck the woodwork three times against Ivory Coast and created chances against Curazao, but the ball refused to go in. Head coach Sebastián Beccacece’s side must find a breakthrough against a German defence that has conceded only twice so far. A repeat of the 2006 group‑stage meeting, when Germany beat Ecuador 3-0, would send the South Americans home.
Germany’s firepower and Undav’s impact
Germany has scored nine goals in two matches, seven of them against Curazao. The standout performer is striker Deniz Undav. The 29-year-old has netted three times and provided two assists despite coming off the bench in both games. His involvement means he has had a direct hand in more than half of Germany’s goals, and he is averaging a goal roughly every 19 minutes on the pitch. Undav has touched the ball only 29 times in the tournament, yet he has made dangerous touches inside the box, and his scoring rate places him among the early candidates for the Golden Boot.
