"Le libere donne" – Series About Writer Mario Tobino and His Psychiatric Hospital

Italian public broadcaster RAI is working on a high-budget period drama "Le libere donne," which will be a fictionalized portrait of the life and work of writer and psychiatrist Mario Tobino. The series is set in the 1950s at the psychiatric hospital in Maggiano, which Tobino directed for many years. The popular actor Lino Guanciale will star as Tobino. Sources indicate the production aims not only for a biographical portrayal but also a deep reflection on oppressive social structures, care for people with mental illnesses, and collective post-war trauma. Mario Tobino (1910-1991) was a prominent figure in post-war Italian literature and psychiatry. As a doctor and director of the hospital in Maggiano, he introduced innovative, humanistic treatment methods, opposing the isolation and objectification of patients. His literary work, often drawing from professional experiences, tackled themes of madness, freedom, and the human condition, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards. Described by its creators as a "story about freedom," the series draws directly from the writer's diaries and his novels, such as "Le libere donne di Magliano." The titular "free women" are the hospital's female patients who – paradoxically – found refuge within its walls from the restrictive social, familial, and moral norms prevalent in 1950s Italy. The production seeks to portray the hospital not as a place of isolation but as a space where women could reclaim their voice and identity. The series is directed by Gianluigi Maria Tavarelli, known for other historical productions for RAI.
