Nicolas Dupont-Aignan launches fourth French presidential bid for 2027 on Frexit platform

Nicolas Dupont-Aignan announced his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election on 19 September 2026 during a political rally in Yerres, Essonne. The declaration marks his fourth presidential bid as the president of the sovereignist political party Debout la France. Dupont-Aignan previously ran in 2022, when he secured 2.1% of the national vote in the first round. His announcement adds another contender to the political right, following the declared candidacy of Marine Le Pen and preceding the expected entry of Éric Zemmour. Speaking to party members during his seasonal political return, Dupont-Aignan stated that his goal is to restore independence to France and return governing power to the public.

European Union exit and foreign policy

The primary foundation of Dupont-Aignan's 2027 platform is an exit from the European Union, commonly known as Frexit. In his speech, he described leaving the bloc as the necessary step to reclaim state authority and governance levers. Dupont-Aignan argued that leaving the European Union would grant France full control over national borders to manage migration policies through the sovereign state. On public finances, he pledged to balance state budgets by ending French financial contributions to the European Union and halting aid payments to Ukraine. He also claimed that France would not stand alone after leaving the bloc, predicting that several other European countries would follow the French exit.

We must decolonize France, politically by leaving the European Union, economically with intelligent protectionism, migration-wise with the sovereign state, culturally by rehabilitating the French language.

Economic and industrial strategy

Dupont-Aignan outlined an economic program based on state protectionism, pointing to commercial policies implemented by the United States and China. His platform aims to stimulate domestic reindustrialization by halting all public subsidies to companies that relocate operations abroad, alongside a target to repatriate two million jobs to France. To incentivize employment, Dupont-Aignan promised to make overtime hours tax-free and remove inheritance taxes on primary residences. In addition, his platform calls for capping the accumulation of social welfare benefits below the level of the national minimum wage (Smic) to ensure working wages remain above welfare assistance.

Pensions and sovereign fund proposal

Regarding pension reform, Dupont-Aignan pledged to protect current retirees by refusing to des-index pensions from inflation rates. To finance the system for future generations, he proposed setting the legal retirement age at 62 years and nine months. His plan also incorporates a minimum retirement benefit funded through capitalization to operate alongside public pensions. Furthermore, Dupont-Aignan proposed establishing a state sovereign wealth fund modeled on Norway's investment fund to channel capital into top-tier French companies. Addressing his electoral prospects at the close of his speech, he maintained that his platform represents the broader sentiment of French voters.
