Real Madrid sign Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for €20 million
Real Madrid have completed the signing of Dutch international Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year contract, the club announced on Sunday. The 30-year-old right-back becomes the fourth new arrival under returning coach José Mourinho.
The transfer
Real Madrid announced on Sunday the signing of Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year contract, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2030. The Spanish club activated his €20 million ($22.9 million) release clause, according to multiple reports. Dumfries had two years remaining on his Inter deal but the Italian champions were open to his departure.
Real Madrid C.F. and Inter Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Denzel Dumfries, who is linked to our club for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.
Dumfries' career
The 30-year-old spent five seasons at Inter, making 207 appearances and contributing 27 goals and 28 assists. He won eight trophies with the Nerazzurri, including two Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia crowns, and was part of the domestic double-winning side last season. Before Italy, Dumfries played for PSV Eindhoven in his native Netherlands. He featured in all four of the Netherlands' matches at the recent World Cup, where they were eliminated by Morocco in the knockout stage.
Real Madrid's rebuild
Dumfries becomes the fourth signing of the summer for new coach José Mourinho, following Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konate. The club is reshaping its squad after a trophyless 2025-26 campaign in which they finished behind Barcelona in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals. President Florentino Pérez, re-elected on June 7, had promised during his campaign to strengthen the defence and identified Dumfries as a key target.
Competition for places
Dumfries will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back spot, filling the void left by Dani Carvajal, who is currently sidelined with a fractured toe. The Dutchman's physicality and attacking instincts are expected to suit Mourinho's system. The squad is now largely set for the new season, with the club indicating no further midfield signings unless a player leaves.
What's next
Mourinho will begin pre-season training in mid-July, once players return from their post-World Cup breaks. The Portuguese coach, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, returns after a stint at Benfica and is tasked with restoring the club to the top of Spanish and European football.
