Russian drone strikes truck 800 metres from Polish border, prompting air alerts in eastern Poland

A Russian drone destroyed a vehicle near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn checkpoint during an overnight assault across Ukraine, prompting Poland to scramble military aircraft and activate emergency sirens.

Russian strike hits transport near Yahodyn crossing

A Russian drone strike destroyed a civilian truck roughly 800 metres from the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing on Ukrainian territory during a mass aerial bombardment on 13 September 2026. Dariusz Sienicki, spokesperson for the Nadbużański Border Guard Regional Unit, stated that Polish officers received confirmation of the strike from Ukrainian counterparts in the early morning hours. Reports from Polish media also detailed an aerial strike hitting a locomotive pulling a passenger train on the Kyiv to Warsaw route approximately 2 kilometres from the Polish frontier, resulting in no passenger casualties. Polish authorities temporarily suspended all border clearance procedures at checkpoints along the border with Ukraine during the overnight attacks as a safety precaution. Normal traffic resumed later in the morning at the Dorohusk, Zosin, and Dołhobyczów checkpoints, with clearances at the Hrebenne crossing scheduled to restart shortly afterward.

Ukrainian government appeals for economic retaliation

The strike near the frontier coincided with a wider overnight assault in which Russian forces launched over 450 drones, including jet-powered variants, alongside four Banderol rocket-drones against targets across Ukraine. Ukrainian Air Force reports confirmed that the nationwide bombardment left at least three people dead and 36 others injured, with multiple strikes landing in western oblasts bordering Poland. Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrij Sybiha responded to the strikes by warning European and NATO partners of the immediate proximity of the conflict to their borders.

Barbaric Russian attacks near the border crossing between Ukraine and Poland in Yahodyn are not only another escalation of aggression against our state borders. This is Putin's terror knocking directly at the doors of the EU and NATO. Dear partners, Russian barbarians are at your gates.

— Andrij Sybiha

Sybiha urged Western governments to implement immediate and uncompromising sanctions against Moscow rather than partial measures. His proposals included a total trade embargo, a comprehensive entry ban for Russian nationals, and sweeping restrictions targeting the Russian military-industrial complex to raise the financial burden of continuing the war.

Putin must understand that his barbarism will be met with decisive actions that will raise the costs of waging war to a level that will be unacceptable to him. That is the only way to stop him.

— Andrij Sybiha

Poland scrambles fighter jets and activates sirens

Poland's Operational Command of the Armed Forces deployed Polish and allied military aviation to secure national airspace as Russian projectiles struck western Ukraine. Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau in the Chancellery of the President, confirmed on Sunday morning that no Russian projectile penetrated Polish airspace during the incident. Przydacz stated that military monitoring assets tracked the situation continuously because the explosions occurred in immediate proximity to the border. The Polish Government Centre for Security distributed emergency mobile alerts after 04:00 to residents in Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, warning of active military air operations. Air raid sirens sounded across six districts in Lubelskie voivodeship, specifically Włodawa, Łęczna, Świdnik, Krasnystaw, Chełm city, and Chełm poviat, before security services cancelled the regional alert at approximately 05:00.
