Manchester City documentary reveals Pep Guardiola fallout with Kyle Walker and board tensions

The four-part Prime Video docuseries A Beautiful Obsession, directed by Kevin MacDonald, captures the final two seasons of Pep Guardiola's 10-year tenure at Manchester City. A central focus is the deterioration of Guardiola's relationship with former club captain Kyle Walker during City's difficult run in late 2024. Following a 2-0 loss at Anfield in December 2024, Guardiola held Walker accountable for losing possession before a penalty conceded to Luis Diaz. The dressing-room exchange escalated when Walker objected to being singled out during team analysis.

Guardiola responded that Walker needed to accept responsibility as captain, though Walker claimed his manager had not wanted him in the role. Walker had been elected captain by teammates alongside vice-captains Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva. After appearing in three subsequent fixtures, including a derby loss to Manchester United where Amad Diallo scored, Walker requested a departure and joined AC Milan on loan in January 2025 before moving permanently to Burnley. Guardiola subsequently appointed Bernardo Silva as club captain in the summer of 2025.

Personal strain and divorce disclosure

City endured nine defeats in a span of 12 games in late 2024, representing the worst sequence of Guardiola's managerial career. The documentary details the personal toll on Guardiola, including his separation from his wife Cristina Serra. Managerial assistant Manel Estiarte addressed the squad directly to explain that Guardiola was navigating a divorce. Following a Champions League defeat against Juventus, which marked City's seventh loss in 10 matches, Guardiola addressed his players openly regarding his private life.

The docuseries also captures other dressing-room moments, such as De Bruyne criticizing the squad after a 4-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, and injured midfielder Rodri watching from the room. Guardiola repeatedly challenged the commitment of his team, telling players that he had extended his contract to fight alongside them rather than leave.

Board reactions and departure threats

Tensions between Guardiola and club leadership surfaced in November 2025 following a 2-0 home loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Guardiola made 10 changes to the starting lineup, a squad rotation choice that drew direct criticism from club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. Recorded voice notes between Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano reveal executive frustration over putting top-eight qualification at risk. Al Mubarak described the match as one of the lowest points for the club and stated he was too angry to speak to Guardiola immediately afterwards.

Soriano cautioned in the recordings that the board should not react with excessive hostility, noting that geniuses are often unbalanced. When asked about that description, Guardiola acknowledged the characterization. Al Mubarak noted that Guardiola had threatened to resign approximately 100 times during his decade-long spell, which produced 20 trophies before he stood down at the conclusion of last season. The documentary premieres in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 19 August 2026.
