Djokovic crushes Tsitsipas to reach Wimbledon third round, Gauff escapes on anniversary of her breakthrough
Novak Djokovic needed just 98 minutes to dismiss Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 6-2, while Coco Gauff fought off a match point threat to beat Solana Sierra on a dramatic third day at the All England Club.
Djokovic dismantles Tsitsipas in 98-minute masterclass
Novak Djokovic produced a vintage performance to overwhelm Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the second round at Wimbledon, extending his head‑to‑head dominance to twelve straight wins. The seventh seed fired 33 winners and just seven unforced errors, snatching a decisive break at 4-4 in the second set after Tsitsipas missed two overheads. Djokovic then won eight of the last ten games to wrap up victory in one hour and 38 minutes.
I feel great, I try not to take these moments for granted. I feel very privileged to be walking out on the court at age 30 plus.
Djokovic, 39, joked with a court assistant before the match and later thanked golfers Rory McIlroy (wearing his Masters green jacket) and Justin Rose for watching from the Royal Box. He next faces Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
Gauff marks career anniversary with a dramatic escape
Seven years to the day after her stunning debut win over Venus Williams on the same No. 1 Court, Coco Gauff came within two points of defeat against Solana Sierra. The Argentine, ranked 56th, served for the match at 5-4 in the third set and led 7-4 in the deciding tiebreak. Out of position at 7-7, Gauff conjured an improbable half‑volley winner from behind the baseline, then sealed a 6-3 3-6 7-6(10-7) win with an ace.
If I could do it that day, I can do it any day.
Gauff, the seventh seed, landed more than half of her first serves and struck five aces. She meets compatriot Claire Liu next.
Sinner and Sabalenka tested but advance
World number ones Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka both reached the third round in straight sets despite facing stern resistance. Sinner edged Nuno Borges 7-6(4) 7-6(2) 6-4, saving a set point in the second set. The Italian admitted work remains after a five‑set opener.
There are a few things we need to improve. We’ll see what comes.
Sabalenka was cruising at 6-1 before McCartney Kessler roared back to 5-2 in the second and held four set points. The top seed raised her intensity to win the tiebreak 9-7 and will now face Jelena Ostapenko.
She played incredible and played super aggressive and it was really tough to handle the second set and I am glad to have powered through.
Andreeva’s double dream ended by former champion
Fifth seed Mirra Andreeva saw her bid to emulate Serena Williams’ 2025 feat of winning Roland‑Garros and Wimbledon back‑to‑back halted by Barbora Krejcikova. Despite saving six match points, the 19‑year‑old fell 4-6 7-5 6-4 to the 2024 champion’s cool grass‑court craft.
Osaka cruises, Evans bids farewell
Naomi Osaka, a four‑time Grand Slam champion, beat Anastasia Gasanova 6-3 6-2. Dan Evans ended his Wimbledon career in doubles, still unhappy about missing a singles wildcard. The third day also saw Karolina Muchova and Jessica Pegula progress.
