Five Dead, Two Critically Injured in Explosion at South Korean Rocket Factory — Third Fatal Accident at Hanwha Aerospace Site Since 2018

An explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace plant in Daejeon, South Korea, killed at least five workers and left two others with severe injuries on Monday morning, marking the third fatal accident at the facility in eight years.

A powerful explosion ripped through a Hanwha Aerospace factory in Daejeon, South Korea, on Monday morning, killing at least five workers and critically injuring two others. The blast occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time at the defense contractor's research and development site, which specializes in rocket engines, solid-fuel propellants, and tactical guided weapons. Dark plumes of smoke were seen rising from the building as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Casualties and rescue efforts

Of the seven workers present at the time of the explosion, five died and two managed to escape on their own. One survivor suffered burns over most of their body and remains in critical condition, according to a district official in Yuseong. The intense fire initially prevented authorities from identifying the deceased. South Korea's Prime Minister Kim Min Seok ordered all available personnel and equipment to be mobilized for the ongoing rescue and recovery operation, with officials warning the death toll could still rise.

A pattern of fatal accidents

The Daejeon plant has now experienced three deadly explosions in recent years. In May 2018, five people died in a blast at the same facility, and in February 2019, three more workers were killed. According to South Korean online outlet News1, the latest explosion — like the two previous incidents — is believed to be linked to work processes involving rocket propulsion systems, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Investigation and possible cause

While the exact cause remains undetermined, initial reports suggest the explosion may have occurred during cleaning operations related to explosives or equipment used for manufacturing rocket fuel. Firefighters took approximately two hours to extinguish the flames. The firefighting effort was reportedly complicated by the fact that the factory's floor plans are classified as a state secret. Hanwha Aerospace issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and pledging a thorough investigation.

We are deeply shocked and overwhelmed with grief by the tragic accident this morning [...] which cost the lives of five of our precious colleagues.

— Hanwha Aerospace

Strategic importance of the site

The Hanwha Aerospace facility in Daejeon, located about 150 kilometers south of Seoul, is considered a cornerstone of South Korea's defense industry. The plant focuses on research and development, covering advanced weapons technologies, missile systems, and solid-propellant rocket engines. The company is a major player in the production of artillery systems, guided weapons, and aerospace components for the South Korean military.
