Six-year-old boy airlifted to Athens after serious leg injury in Crete traffic accident
A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a car in Schinaria, Rethymno, and flown to Athens for specialist treatment to save his leg.
The accident
A traffic accident occurred early Wednesday afternoon on the beach road in Schinaria, a coastal area in the Rethymno regional unit of Crete. The 6-year-old boy was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by his father when, under circumstances still under investigation, the two-wheeler collided with a passenger car. The father sustained minor injuries.
Injury and initial treatment
The child was rushed by ambulance to Rethymno Hospital, where doctors found a severe open fracture of the lower limb. He underwent a lengthy emergency surgery that, according to hospital officials, was completed successfully and stabilised his condition. The focus, however, remained on the leg itself, with medical staff fighting to avoid amputation.
The child's condition is not critical. He has not been intubated and his life is not in danger. The transfer is solely due to the severity of the leg injury.
Airlift to Athens
Given the complexity of the injury, the decision was made to transfer the boy to a specialised unit in Athens. The airlift was organised for around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, with the child arriving in the capital during the night. Reports indicate he was taken to KAT Hospital, a major trauma centre, where a specialised medical team will continue efforts to save the limb.
Investigation underway
The exact cause of the collision remains unclear. The Spili Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the accident. No further details about the other vehicle or the sequence of events have been released.
