The co-founder of the Carabinieri's elite GIS unit and Italy's most decorated carabiniere, known only as Comandante Alfa, died on Sunday at age 75, his family announced.
A life in the shadows
Comandante Alfa, the co-founder of the Carabinieri's elite Gruppo di Intervento Speciale (GIS) and the most decorated carabiniere in Italian history, died on Sunday, 19 July 2026, at the age of 75. For decades he operated in total anonymity, his face hidden behind a black balaclava (the "mefisto nero") that became the symbol of his undercover missions. Born in Castelvetrano, Sicily, in 1951, he rose to the rank of luogotenente and spent his entire career in anti-terrorism, hostage rescue and high-risk operations, both on Italian soil and in the Middle East.

Four decades of operations
In 1977 he helped found the GIS, the Carabinieri's special intervention group specialised in counter-terrorism, hostage liberation and other high-threat scenarios. Over a 40-year career he was involved in a series of landmark actions: the revolt inside the Trani super-prison, the capture of the collectors holding Cesare Casella, the liberation of hostage Patrizia Tacchella, and the close-protection detail for anti-mafia magistrate Nino Di Matteo in Palermo in 2013. Throughout, his real name was never officially confirmed; neither he nor the Carabinieri ever disclosed his identity, preserving the mystique of the "shadow man" who served the state from the darkness.
Awards and legacy
His service earned him the Croce d'oro al merito dell'Arma dei Carabinieri and the Cavaliere dell'Ordine Militare d'Italia, the country's highest military honour. After retiring from active duty as an elite instructor, he turned to writing, publishing successful autobiographical works such as "Io vivo nell'ombra" (I Live in the Shadows) and "Cuore di rondine" (Swallow's Heart), through which he continued to promote the values of legality and institutional duty.
Hometown tribute
Giovanni Lentini, the mayor of Castelvetrano, expressed his sorrow at the loss of a fellow citizen who never forgot his roots.
I learned with sadness of the passing of Comandante Alfa, our fellow citizen. Among the founders of the GIS, the Carabinieri's Special Intervention Group, he dedicated his life to the service of the State, taking part in some of the most important operations against terrorism and organised crime. A path always lived with great discretion, courage and a sense of duty. Even living far from Castelvetrano, he never forgot his city, remaining close to the community also through concrete acts of solidarity, such as support for our hospital, and constantly promoting the values of legality.
