Naples rally launches Italian centre-left campaign, disrupted by Potere al Popolo protest
The Italian centre-left coalition held its first campaign rally for the 2027 elections in Naples, only to be interrupted by activists from Potere al Popolo accusing the bloc of hypocrisy on workers' rights.
Campaign launch in Naples
The centre-left coalition gathered in Piazza del Gesù for its first joint rally ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections. PD secretary Elly Schlein, M5s president Giuseppe Conte, and AVS spokespersons Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni stood together on stage, aiming to project unity against Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government. The outdoor event, held in sweltering heat, was a deliberate contrast to their previous photo opportunity in an air-conditioned Rome restaurant.
We will never again do the right-wing the favour of dividing us. We will go united to win the next elections.
Protest interrupts the rally
About ten minutes into the event, a group of unemployed people and activists from Potere al Popolo began shouting "Shame" and "Clowns", waving flags and forcing a suspension. Conte attempted to mediate, inviting the protesters to talk and stressing that the coalition does not suppress dissent. Fratoianni also sought direct contact to restore calm.
We don't make decrees to stop you from speaking. Come and talk to us on the other side.
After roughly fifteen minutes, the rally resumed. Bonelli accused the protesters of playing into the hands of the far right, while the crowd of party flags and militants filled the square again.
- Schlein, Conte, Bonelli and Fratoianni take the stage in Piazza del Gesù.
- Potere al Popolo activists shout 'Vergogna', wave flags and halt speeches.
- Conte invites dialogue, says 'We don't make decrees to suppress dissent'.
- Bonelli speaks, rally continues after a 15-minute interruption.
Policy pledges and criticism of Meloni
Conte promised that a statutory minimum wage would be the coalition's first measure in office, citing IMF data that Italy will be second-last among 30 major economies in 2026 and last in 2027. Schlein attacked the government's plan to change the electoral law, calling it a sign of fear of losing. Other shared proposals include equal parental leave, a reduction in working hours with no pay cut, and stronger public healthcare and education.
The reality is a country that is not growing. We need to conceive measures for growth and for the people in difficulty.
Internal and external tensions
The rally's exclusive format (Pd, M5s, Avs) irritated centrist allies and reformist wings within the PD itself. Some noted that M5s had recently voted alongside the League and Vannacci on Ukraine in the European Parliament. Potere al Popolo's national spokesperson Giuliano Granato accused the coalition of hypocrisy, pointing out that Naples approved a minimum wage two years ago but contract workers still earn 7–8 euros per hour.
