Railway cables cut in multiple locations across Calabria, train circulation suspended across the region
Unknown perpetrators cut cables at several points on the Calabrian railway network early on 9 July, forcing a total suspension of train services from Battipaglia to Paola and across the entire region.
Sabotage on the rails
Rail traffic in Calabria came to a standstill on the morning of 9 July after cables were deliberately severed at multiple locations. The damage was discovered on the Tyrrhenian line between San Lucido and Longobardo, and on the Ionian line between Cutro and Isola di Capo Rizzuto. Authorities confirmed the act was intentional, describing it as a malicious attack by unknown individuals.
- Train circulation suspended across Calabria after cables cut at multiple points.
- Gradual resumption begins; replacement buses activated.
- Technicians work to restore full infrastructure; delays and cancellations persist.
Disruption across the region
The sabotage blocked all trains on the Salerno–Paola, Catanzaro Lido–Taranto, Sibari–Paola, and Cosenza–Paola routes. Services were suspended from Battipaglia (Salerno) to Paola (Cosenza), and the halt was then extended to the entire regional network. High-speed, Intercity, and Regional trains faced delays, route limitations, or cancellations. Replacement buses were activated to assist stranded passengers.
Gradual recovery
Train circulation began to resume gradually from 8:20 AM, according to infrastructure manager RFI. Technicians were dispatched to repair the damaged cables and restore full functionality. Despite the partial restart, residual delays and cancellations were expected throughout the day as repair work continued.
