Cable theft disrupts Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail with 25-minute delays
A cable theft between Malagón and Ciudad Real caused signal failure on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line Saturday, delaying trains by about 25 minutes during the peak summer travel period.
Incident details
On Saturday, 4 July, a cable theft between the towns of Malagón and Ciudad Real caused a signalling failure on the high-speed rail line linking Madrid with Andalusia. Adif, Spain's railway infrastructure manager, reported the theft on social media platform X, stating that track circuits were damaged. Long-distance and medium-distance high-speed services on the southern corridor were affected, with delays averaging 25 minutes. Adif personnel were dispatched to repair the damage and restore normal signalling.
Travel disruption amid holiday exodus
The incident occurred on the first weekend of July, a peak period for summer holiday departures in Spain. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) had activated its "Operación Verano 2026" the previous day, forecasting more than 104 million long-distance trips between 3 July and 31 August, a 3.7% rise compared to the same period in 2025. With trains already heavily booked, the delays added strain to the travel plans of thousands of passengers heading to Andalusia and other southern destinations.
A string of rail incidents
Saturday's cable theft is the latest in a series of disruptions on Spain's high-speed network. On 24 June, a high-voltage cable from outside the railway infrastructure fell onto the overhead line, disrupting traffic. Later that same day, a cable theft between Urda (Toledo) and Malagón caused delays on services operated by Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo. Then, on Thursday, 2 July, a power supply failure at Cerro Negro, near Madrid, delayed Avant and long-distance trains departing from Atocha station. Later that day, a loss of voltage in the catenary halted all trains between Madrid and Galicia, prompting Adif to arrange alternative bus transport for stranded passengers.

Response and security concerns
Adif said its technical teams were working to repair the damaged circuits and restore full service, though no timeline was provided. The repeated cable thefts, three in just over two weeks, have highlighted vulnerabilities in the rail corridor's security. No arrests have been announced in connection with the latest incident. The operator has not disclosed the estimated cost of the damage or the number of passengers affected.
