Nyland saves Guimaraes penalty after VAR review as Brazil and Norway battle in World Cup last 16
Bruno Guimaraes saw his 10th-minute penalty saved by Orjan Nyland after a VAR review, leaving the round-of-16 tie between Brazil and Norway finely poised at MetLife Stadium.
Early drama
Norway had a goal disallowed in the opening minutes before the game swung to the other end. In the 10th minute, Kristoffer Ajer fouled Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area. Referee Ismail Elfath initially waved play on, sparking furious protests from Brazilian players.
The penalty incident
Elfath consulted the VAR monitor and, after replays confirmed the foul, pointed to the spot. Bruno Guimaraes stepped up but struck a predictable shot to the right corner. Nyland read the intention perfectly, diving to parry the ball and keep the score level.
Everyone knows Haaland. I don't need to explain to my defenders how he plays. They know him better than I do, because they have played against him many times.
The bigger picture
Brazil reached this stage after a 2-1 comeback win over Japan in the round of 32, with Casemiro and Gabriel Martinelli scoring the decisive goal in the 95th minute. Norway, back at the World Cup after 28 years, beat Ivory Coast 2-1 thanks to an 86th-minute winner from Erling Haaland.
Haaland factor
The Manchester City striker has five goals in three appearances at this tournament and 60 in 53 caps overall. Norway's last World Cup meeting with Brazil came in 1998, when they won 2-1 in the group stage. A 2006 friendly ended 1-1.
What's at stake
The winner will join Morocco and France in the quarter-finals. Brazil, five-time world champions, are favourites but have already been held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in the group stage. Norway, coached by Stale Solbakken, are aiming for their first ever quarter-final appearance.
