Explosion at Kronospan wood factory in Brașov leads to Red Intervention Plan activation; no casualties found
An early-morning explosion ripped through a Kronospan wood-products plant in Brașov on 22 July, triggering a large fire and prompting Romanian authorities to activate the county-level Red Intervention Plan.
Explosion and initial response
The blast occurred on the morning of Wednesday, 22 July, at a production hall of the Kronospan wood products factory in Brașov. Local media reported that the shockwave was felt as far away as the Stupini neighbourhood. The explosion was immediately followed by a fire, with open flames and heavy smoke coming from a sawdust conveyor.
Given the nature of the event and to streamline the response mission, the Red Intervention Plan was activated at the Brașov county level.
Emergency resources deployed
At the scene, authorities allocated six fire engines, one CBRN vehicle, two height-rescue vehicles, two SMURD first-aid crews, one mobile intensive care unit, and two ambulances from the County Ambulance Service. The deployment reflected a precautionary full-scale mobilization under the Red Plan, a protocol typically triggered for incidents with mass-casualty potential.
Casualties and damage assessment
Despite the scale of the operation, reconnaissance at the site confirmed that no victims were found. Firefighters reported that the flames covered an area of roughly 300 square metres. Once the absence of casualties was established and the fire was brought under control, the Red Intervention Plan was deactivated. No further details about the cause of the blast or the extent of material damage were released at the time.
