Girondins Bordeaux thrown out of national leagues, facing sixth-tier relegation over €9 million shortfall
The six-time French champions have been banned from all national competitions after failing to provide €9 million in guarantees, leaving the club's future hanging on an appeal within two weeks.
A historic fall from grace
FC Girondins de Bordeaux, a club whose shirt was once worn by Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps and Bixente Lizarazu, has been expelled from all French national competitions by the financial watchdog DNCG. The decision caps a catastrophic slide that has seen the six-time Ligue 1 winner tumble from the top flight to the brink of regional amateur football in just four years.
The DNCG ruling and its immediate consequences
The Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion ruled on Tuesday 30 June that Bordeaux had failed to present the required €9 million in guarantees to cover the 2025-26 deficit and fund the 2026-27 campaign. As a result, the club will be registered in Régional 1 (the sixth tier) unless an appeal succeeds within roughly fifteen days. The club confirmed it "intends to appeal this decision within the regulatory deadlines."
This appeal process will allow FC Girondins de Bordeaux to finalise the financing of the 2026/27 season and present all updated elements before the appeals commission, which will meet in about fifteen days.
If the missing funds are not secured, the club’s legal entity faces compulsory liquidation, leaving only the amateur association to restart at regional level, according to SudOuest.
A path through the crisis: Lopez and Sparta Capital
Owner Gérard Lopez, a Spanish-Luxembourgish businessman who also controls Boavista in Portugal, saw his club suffer three relegations on his watch (2022, 2024 and now this administrative exclusion). He is negotiating with British investment fund Sparta Capital, whose representative Gilles Frétigné attended the DNCG hearing alongside Lopez (by video). Sparta Capital is reportedly prepared to inject the required €10 million, either as a loan or via a takeover, which would allow Bordeaux to remain in National 2 (the fourth tier). The club’s statement expressed confidence that financing would be secured before the appeal body meets.
- Relegated from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2 after finishing bottom of the top flight.
- Administratively demoted to Championnat National 2 (4th tier) for financial irregularities.
- DNCG excludes club from all national competitions; registration defaulted to Régional 1 (6th tier).
- Appeal deadline: Bordeaux must present €9 million in guarantees to avoid liquidation and remain in National 2.
A glorious past, an uncertain future
Bordeaux’s trophy cabinet includes six French league titles (most recently in 2009), four Coupes de France, and a 1996 UEFA Cup final appearance against Bayern Munich. Legends such as Jean Tigana, Jules Koundé, Klaus Allofs and Dieter Müller have all pulled on the navy-and-white jersey. Now, however, the club that once contested the Champions League faces the very real prospect of regional football, and, should the appeal fail, potential dissolution.
