Real Madrid signs Bernardo Silva on free transfer after nine-year Manchester City spell
The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder arrives at the Bernabéu on a contract running to June 2028, becoming the latest piece in José Mourinho's summer rebuild after a trophyless season.
The deal
Real Madrid confirmed on Wednesday that Bernardo Silva has joined the club on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract through to 30 June 2028. The Portuguese midfielder left Manchester City at the end of his contract in April after nine seasons at the Etihad, during which he made 460 appearances and collected 19 trophies. The move had been anticipated for days, with Spanish media reporting the financial terms before the official announcement.
Real Madrid C. F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.
Financial terms
According to El Confidencial, cited by La Vanguardia, Real Madrid paid Silva a signing bonus of €10 million net (roughly €20 million gross) and disbursed a further €20 million in commission to his agent Jorge Mendes and his entourage. The player's salary is reported at close to €10 million net per season, well above what Barcelona offered. The deal is the fourth of the window for Madrid after Ibrahima Konaté (free from Liverpool), Marc Cucurella (from Chelsea for a reported £52 million, or €60 million according to La Repubblica), and Denzel Dumfries, whose €20 million release clause at Inter can be triggered only between 1 and 15 July.
Mourinho's project
Silva's arrival reunites him with compatriot José Mourinho, who has returned to the Real Madrid bench. The Portuguese connection was cited by multiple outlets as a decisive factor. La Repubblica frames Silva as the third signing after Konaté and Cucurella, while La Vanguardia calls him the fourth after Konaté, Dumfries and Cucurella. The club is rebuilding after a 2025-26 campaign in which it finished eight points behind champions Barcelona in LaLiga and was knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich.

What Silva brings
Silva is one of the most decorated players in Manchester City's history: six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, a Champions League (2023 edition), three Community Shields, a FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup. He scored 76 goals in his 460 City appearances. Known for tactical versatility, technique and work rate, he was a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola's system and arrives to bring experience to a Madrid midfield that also features young talent. The club statement described him as a player with vast international experience and an enviable trophy cabinet.
Playing for Real Madrid is a childhood dream. I am looking forward to starting this new chapter and helping the club win titles.
World Cup context
