Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise scored first-half goals at Signal Iduna Park as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 1-2 to claim their twelfth German Super Cup title.
Bayern establish two-goal lead in Dortmund
Bayern Munich secured their twelfth German Super Cup title on Saturday evening, defeating Borussia Dortmund 1-2 at Signal Iduna Park. The German Super Cup matches the winner of the German Cup against the reigning Bundesliga champion. Because Bayern Munich captured both domestic trophies in the preceding campaign, Borussia Dortmund earned entry into the fixture as the Bundesliga runners-up. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany entered the match without attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala, who was unavailable for selection after suffering two fainting spells. Despite the absence, the Munich side dictated the tempo throughout the opening period.
Bayern opened the scoring in the 28th minute courtesy of new signing Nathaniel Brown. The player beat Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a left-footed strike to register the first goal of the match. In the first minute of first-half stoppage time (45+1st minute), Michael Olise doubled Bayern's advantage. Olise embarked on a solo run through the Dortmund defence before beating Kobel with a toe-poke finish, sending Bayern into the dressing room with a 0-2 lead.
Second-half pressure and Dortmund response
Borussia Dortmund reorganized their attack in the second half to find a path back into the match. The home side brought on Greek attacker Giannis Konstantelias from the substitutes' bench to partner former Genk midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas in creative roles behind main striker Sehrou Guirassy. The tactical changes generated momentum for the host team, creating multiple clear opportunities against a Bayern defence that came under sustained pressure.
Dortmund reduced the deficit with fifteen minutes remaining on the clock. In the 75th minute, Portuguese forward Fabio Silva, formerly of Anderlecht, finished off a fast offensive transition to make the score 1-2. Silva placed his shot past 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was starting his sixteenth season in goal for Bayern Munich.
- Nathaniel Brown scores the opening goal for Bayern Munich with a left-footed strike.
- Michael Olise doubles Bayern Munich's lead following a solo run.
- Fabio Silva scores for Borussia Dortmund on a counter-attack.
- Ramy Bensebaini receives a red card for a foul on Ismael Saibari.
Kane hits post and Bensebaini sent off
Bayern Munich responded to Dortmund's goal with immediate offensive pressure of their own. Forward Harry Kane nearly restored the two-goal cushion when his curling effort struck the goalpost of Gregor Kobel. Although both sides created further chances during the final stages of the encounter, neither team managed to alter the scoreline.
Dortmund's pursuit of an equalizer was disrupted in the closing minutes when Algerian defender Ramy Bensebaini was sent off. Bensebaini received a straight red card for a late tackle directed at the ankle of Bayern midfielder Ismael Saibari. Dortmund were unable to threaten Neuer's goal during the remaining minutes with ten men on the pitch.
Kompany secures second consecutive Super Cup
The 1-2 victory represents Bayern Munich's second consecutive German Super Cup victory and their twelfth title in 26 editions of the tournament. The result also secures a second Super Cup title for Vincent Kompany during his tenure in Munich, having led the squad to a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the previous year's curtain-raiser.
Following that earlier triumph against Stuttgart, Kompany's side went on to claim the domestic league and cup double while advancing to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. With the first trophy of the new campaign secured, Kompany has stated an ambition to compete across all competitions, as the manager seeks to capture the Champions League after falling short in prior rounds.
