Barcelona defeat Feyenoord 5-1 with Raphinha brace in Champions League opener

Opening round dominance

FC Barcelona began their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league-phase campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord at the Spotify Camp Nou. The match opened under persistent rain that had developed across the province of Barcelona earlier in the morning. Hansi Flick's side established control from the kickoff against the Dutch club managed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The fixture was only the second European tie between the sides since 1974, when Barcelona followed a 0-0 draw in Rotterdam with a 3-0 home win. Gjivai Zechiël missed the target after a misplaced clearance from Koundé, while Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García stopped a low effort from Moussa and prevented an accidental own goal from Andreas Christensen in the 37th minute. Cancelo hit the post before Lamine Yamal drew applause by executing a nutmeg on Feyenoord's Vanhoutte in the 40th minute.

Free kick and captain support

Barcelona extended their tally across the second half with additional goals from Gabriel Jesús, a second from Raphinha, and a direct free kick from Lamine Yamal. The 19-year-old winger, recently appointed as the squad's fifth captain, had displayed frustration during earlier missed opportunities before converting from the set piece. Raphinha embraced the teenager immediately after the goal and explained the importance of maintaining his teammate's confidence.

I know him, I know when he can drift out of the match because things are not going his way. I was trying to encourage him, telling him he was going to score, and that is what happened. I leave happy for him. A winning team is made like this, being happy for each other. He certainly needed it, we forwards always want to score.

Campaign targets under Flick

The victory follows a strong start under Flick, who is in his third season managing Barcelona following previous semi-final and quarter-final eliminations in Europe. Barcelona entered the European opener having recorded four consecutive victories in La Liga, scoring 17 goals and conceding two. The club seeks its first European Cup title since 2015, having previously won the competition in 1992, 2006, 2009, and 2011 alongside domestic doubles. The campaign leads toward the final scheduled for 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano in Madrid. Ahead of the fixture, Yamal explained the squad's collective focus on securing the continental trophy.
