The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued a series of warnings for many regions of Poland. The upcoming nights will bring dense fog limiting visibility and ground frost, while daytime temperatures will be significantly higher. First and second-degree hydrological alerts are in effect simultaneously. At several dozen water gauge stations, particularly in the lower Vistula basin and in Warmia and Masuria, warning and alarm levels have been exceeded.

Dangerous Road Conditions

Dense fog and depositing rime ice will significantly limit visibility to 100 meters at night and in the morning.

Hydrological Threat

Alarm levels exceeded on rivers in the Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships due to snowmelt.

Large Temperature Swings

Frosty nights with ground frost transitioning into very warm, sunny days with temperatures up to 15 degrees.

Poland is currently under the influence of a high-pressure system, which conditions the occurrence of a strong temperature inversion. This phenomenon leads to the formation of dense radiation fog, which at night and in the morning can limit visibility to just one hundred meters. Radiation fog will be particularly troublesome in a belt from Greater Poland to Pomerania and in the eastern part of the country. Forecasters warn that at sub-zero temperatures, fog can deposit rime ice, creating extremely dangerous conditions on roads. IMGW statistics indicate that March is a month of high weather variability, where polar air masses regularly clash with warmer masses from the south, favoring sharp daily temperature fluctuations. The hydrological situation remains tense, despite the lack of intense rainfall in recent days. The main factor influencing the rise in the water table in rivers is the runoff of meltwater from higher parts of the river basin and ice phenomena hindering free flow. The most difficult situation is on the Osa River near Grudziądz and on smaller tributaries of the lower Vistula, where alarm levels have been exceeded. Water services are monitoring flood embankments and hydrotechnical facilities, appealing to residents to exercise caution near riverbeds. 20 stopni — is the current daily temperature difference in some regionsLong-term forecasts show signals of approaching warming, which over the weekend could bring temperatures up to 15 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists temper the enthusiasm of early spring enthusiasts, pointing to the possibility of winter incidents returning in the second half of March. The blocking high-pressure system, which currently provides sunny days, may be broken by deep Atlantic lows, radically changing the weather picture ahead of the upcoming Easter. Currently, atmospheric pressure is reaching very high values, which in sensitive individuals may cause a deterioration in well-being and headaches.
