Greek police dismantle Attica car theft ring that stole at least 36 vehicles and laundered money through a café chain
Hellenic Police dismantled a large car-theft ring active since 2022 in northeast Attica, arresting 13 suspects and recovering 19 altered vehicles, while money was laundered through a well-known café chain.
Investigation and arrests
Police from the Spata Security division wrapped up a months-long probe that began in October 2025, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants and the detention of 13 individuals. Two of the suspects are Greek nationals and the remaining are of Albanian origin. The ring had recently scaled back operations, possibly aware that authorities were closing in.
Scale of the thefts
At least 36 vehicle thefts have been certified by investigators. The group targeted cars from one Japanese and one French manufacturer, operating mainly in northeast Attica. So far 19 vehicles have been recovered — already altered — and returned to their owners. Because the owners had been compensated by insurers, the insurance companies are expected to pursue legal action against the suspects. Three additional vehicles seized during today’s operation are being examined by the Criminal Investigations Directorate.
Money laundering method
The ring used a café belonging to a well-known chain to launder proceeds. During searches, officers seized at least €30,000 in cash, an air gun, a replica firearm, car keys, and a key programming device. Police are still tracing the ownership of those keys.
