Liverpool agree season-long loan for Barcelona's Ronald Araújo amid defensive injury crisis

Loan deal finalised

Liverpool have agreed to sign Ronald Araújo from Barcelona on a season-long loan with a non-obligatory option to buy, as first reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on Friday, 7 August. Barcelona sporting director Deco reached a verbal agreement with the Premier League club, with the deal completed in a matter of hours during Friday. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and Deco both approved the departure. Documents are expected to be signed within 24 hours, and the 27-year-old Uruguay international is scheduled to complete his medical on Sunday after travelling to Merseyside on Saturday. Liverpool will pay the entirety of Araújo's salary during the loan period.

Defensive crisis at Anfield

The arrival of Araújo addresses a pressing shortage of fit defenders at Liverpool. Ibrahima Konaté departed on a free transfer to Real Madrid earlier this summer, leaving a gap at centre-back. Joe Gomez sustained a muscular injury in Liverpool's first pre-season match and is set to miss the start of the Premier League season. Giovanni Leoni has not played since suffering a cruciate ligament injury on his debut against Southampton in September 2025. New signing Jérémy Jacquet, who joined from Rennes in February for more than £50 million, has not made a competitive appearance after picking up a serious shoulder injury last season and was left out of pre-season matches due to fitness concerns. Right-back Conor Bradley is likely out until November with a knee injury.

With captain Virgil van Dijk absent following World Cup commitments and Jacquet, Gomez and Leoni all injured, manager Andoni Iraola had to rely on teenage centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye during the pre-season tour of the United States. Full-back Luke Chambers also deputised in the middle, with Iraola admitting the squad was "thin" defensively. Ndukwe impressed but must be loaned out as he lacks a work permit for England in 2026-27. Iraola also addressed Jacquet's situation after the defender asked to be substituted in a friendly against Leeds.

Araújo's Barcelona tenure

Araújo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan club Boston River in January 2019 for a fee of around €4.7 million, starting in the B team. He has made 213 first-team appearances for Barcelona, with the Portuguese press reporting 257 matches across all club teams, 20 goals and 6 assists in all competitions. He was part of the Barcelona side that won La Liga last season but made only 11 league starts under Hansi Flick, who preferred a centre-back pairing of Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín. Araújo was granted indefinite leave by Barcelona at the beginning of December after requesting a period of absence, returning to the team at the end of January. He was part of Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay squad for this summer's World Cup but did not make an appearance as the nation exited at the group stage.

Other transfer movements

Liverpool had shown interest in Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa but were deterred by the England defender's £60 million valuation, with Arsenal also seeing an initial approach for Konsa rejected. The club has held talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, though the European champions value him at around £145 million. Meanwhile, Barcelona have reportedly convinced Rodri to join the Catalan club rather than Real Madrid, with Manchester City demanding at least €60 million while Barcelona is prepared to pay €45 million. PSG are expected to pursue Spain's World Cup final hero Ferran Torres, who has one year remaining on his Barcelona contract. Araújo becomes Iraola's second signing at Anfield, after winger Victor Munoz.
