Magda Linette and Magdalena Fręch successfully opened their campaigns at the WTA tournament in Mexico's Merida. Despite significant political tension in the country and on-court health issues for the Poznań native, both players managed to win their matches in straight sets. Katarzyna Piter also advanced to the next round in doubles. Organizers assure that the safety of participants at the event in Yucatán is not threatened, despite a wave of violence in other regions of Mexico.
Linette Wins Despite Injury
Magda Linette defeated Tatjana Maria 2:0, winning the match despite pain after a sudden medical timeout during the set.

Safety a Priority for WTA

Another Polish Player in Doubles
Katarzyna Piter joined her compatriots' successes, winning her doubles match and advancing further.
The first round of the WTA tournament in Merida brought success for both Polish singles players, though not without dramatic moments. Eighth-seeded Magda Linette defeated Germany's Tatjana Maria 7-6(3), 6-3. The match was physically extremely demanding. At one point, the Polish player let out a piercing scream and requested a medical timeout due to leg pain. Despite the physiotherapist's intervention, Linette managed to return to the game and take control of the match, twice recovering from a break deficit in the first set. Simultaneously, Magdalena Fręch fought an exhausting battle against Maria Timofeeva, winning 6-4, 7-6(6). The second set of this clash lasted an hour and a half, with the Łódź native showing nerves of steel, defending a total of five set points. Meanwhile, in the doubles tournament, Katarzyna Piter secured advancement, meaning the Polish contingent continues to play in Mexico. However, sporting successes are interwoven with concerning reports about safety in the country. Mexico is grappling with an escalation of violence following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. While Yucatán has historically been considered a safe region, chaos in other states has caused panic among foreign tourists and athletes. Tennis federation authorities and local organizers issued a special statement to reassure the players. They emphasized that the Merida resort is distant from the epicenter of the unrest and that security at sports venues has been strengthened. Kinga Rusin, reporting from Mexico, described difficulties in leaving some regions, but the tennis players remain in a so-called safety bubble. The next matches for the Polish players are scheduled for Thursday – Linette will face Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, who sensationally eliminated the favored Dayana Yastremska. [{"strona1": "M.
