Poland is under the influence of an active low-pressure system Alina, which has brought a sudden change in weather across the entire country. On Tuesday, February 24, residents of almost all regions are grappling with difficult atmospheric conditions. While rain dominates in the west and south, the northern part of the country, including the Tri-City area, has been blanketed with snow. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns of icing that will occur after dark.
Winter attack in the north
Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot are grappling with intense snowfall and traffic disruptions.
Icing alerts
IMGW warns of freezing on wet road surfaces and pavements after sunset.
Low-pressure system Alina over Poland
The low-pressure system brings rain to the center and west and snowfall to the mountains.
Difficult conditions in the mountains
In the Tatra and Beskid Mountains, snow cover accumulation of several centimeters and strong winds.
The passage of the low-pressure system Alina from over the Atlantic has caused a distinct weather division in Poland. Northern regions of the country, including the Tri-City area, experienced rain with snow, which, combined with overnight frosts, may cause local road disruptions. At the same time, dense clouds and steady rainfall dominate in central and southern Poland, including in Warsaw, Kraków, and Wrocław. Forecasters predict that after sunset, temperatures in many places will drop below zero, leading to the freezing of wet road surfaces and pavements. IMGW has issued appropriate warnings regarding the risk of icing. Centuries of meteorological observations in Poland indicate that February is statistically one of the most unpredictable months, where polar and Atlantic air masses clash. Historical cold records during this period reached below -35 degrees Celsius, while contemporary phenomena increasingly point to sudden thaws and abrupt temperature spikes caused by Atlantic lows. Despite the current cooling, some weather models suggest an upcoming temperature spike caused by an influx of warmer air masses from the west. However, before that happens, the most difficult situation will persist in mountainous regions. In the Tatra and Beskid Mountains, snow cover accumulation could reach several centimeters, which, combined with stronger winds, leads to snowdrifts and blizzards. „Miejscami drogi i chodniki śliskie, szczególnie po zmroku.” (Roads and pavements slippery in places, especially after dark.) — IMGW Meteorologists urge drivers to exercise particular caution, especially on local routes, which may not be cleared of snow first. Internet users, weary of the prolonged winter weather, are reacting to the return of frost with numerous comments and memes, expressing longing for spring. kilkanaście cm — forecasted snow cover accumulation in the mountains In cities such as Olsztyn or Toruń, forecasters do not expect quick clearing.
