Ukraine sends 600 drones at Moscow overnight as Russian strikes kill three in Ukraine
Ukraine launched roughly 600 drones at the Moscow region overnight, wounding three people and hitting a Wildberries warehouse, while Russian strikes killed at least three people and injured more than a dozen across Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk.
Massive drone assault on Moscow region
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 600 drones flew toward the Moscow region between Saturday evening and 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, of which 201 were destroyed over the region. Three people were wounded inside the MKAD ring road and were receiving medical treatment. A warehouse belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries in Koledino, 25 km from central Moscow, was hit; videos showed a fire and a large plume of smoke over the facility. Sobyanin said roughly a third of the drones Ukraine launched at the capital had been destroyed. There was no immediate independent confirmation of the scale of the attack.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities
Russian forces launched missile and drone strikes across Ukraine overnight, killing at least three people and injuring more than 10. A fire broke out at a market in Kyiv after it was hit by Russian missiles and drones. Air-raid sirens sounded four times since Saturday night in the capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least six people, including a child, were injured. Ukraine said it shot down three Russian missiles and nearly 100 drones.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, regional head Ivan Fedorov said two people were killed when a Russian guided aerial bomb destroyed a house. Officials in Dnipropetrovsk reported one person killed and 14 injured. Russia has intensified aerial attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks, while Kyiv has stepped up its targeting of Russian logistics hubs to disrupt military supplies.

Casualties in Russia's Rostov region
Three people were killed and one was wounded in Russia's southern Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, according to regional governor Yuri Sliusar. He said Russian forces destroyed more than 150 drones and missiles over three cities and nine districts across the region. The attacks damaged residential and industrial buildings in the Kamensky district. Several buildings in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky city suffered roof damage, and windows were blown out in an apartment block and at the city's railway station.
NATO jets intercept drones
NATO countries on Ukraine's borders faced fresh drone incursions. Romania's Defense Ministry said a Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating on NATO duties shot down a drone early Sunday after it entered Romanian airspace from Moldova near the border with Ukraine. The interception occurred at 5:01 a.m. local time (0201 UTC). Debris fell in an unpopulated area of Galati county, close to the Ukrainian border. Romanian authorities did not immediately identify the drone's origin. Romania has repeatedly reported drone debris on its territory since 2023 following Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube.
On Friday, an Italian Eurofighter operating under NATO command also shot down a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace. The incidents illustrate the growing reach of drone warfare well beyond Ukraine itself, as both sides escalate long-range strikes in a conflict now in its fifth year.
