Warning Issued Over Phishing and Smishing Attacks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has recorded a sharp increase in sophisticated phishing attacks and IT fraud. Criminals are using smishing and phishing methods, sending fake SMS messages and emails that impersonate notifications from popular courier companies and postal operators. These messages contain links redirecting to fake websites aimed at stealing confidential personal data, login credentials, or financial information. Phishing as a cybercriminal method has existed since the 1990s, evolving from simple, mass-distributed emails to today's specialized, targeted campaigns using advanced social engineering and message personalization. The Regional Data Protection Commissioner, Tilman Wesolowski, issued a public warning, pointing to the particular activity of criminals in recent times. His office appealed to residents for increased vigilance. The official statement emphasized never clicking on links from unexpected messages, even if they appear to come from known and trusted senders.
