Portuguese GNR recovers 142 fuel jerricans in Mediterranean during Frontex operation off Spain
The Portuguese Republican National Guard intercepted a high-speed vessel on 16 July, recovering 142 fuel containers thrown overboard in the Mediterranean Sea during the Frontex-led Operation Spain Indalo 2026.
The operation
The Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) recovered 142 fuel jerricans in the Mediterranean Sea on 16 July 2026. The action was carried out by the crew of the Coastal Patrol Boat (LPC) Bojador, part of the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF), currently deployed in Spain under Frontex's Joint Operation Spain Indalo 2026. The operation is led by Spain's Guardia Civil and coordinated through the International Coordination Centre (ICC) in Madrid.
The interception
During the mission, authorities identified the need to intercept a high-speed vessel (EAV). As the patrol boat moved in, the occupants of the vessel threw multiple fuel containers into the sea in an attempt to discard the cargo. The GNR personnel managed to recover a total of 142 jerricans from the water.
In coordination with the International Coordination Centre (ICC) in Madrid, it became necessary to intercept an EAV. During the action, 142 fuel jerricans that had been thrown into the water by the vessel were recovered from the sea.
The recovered jerricans were subsequently handed over to Spanish authorities.
Environmental and safety impact
The intervention had a dual effect beyond the immediate seizure. By removing the fuel containers from the sea, the GNR helped prevent a potential marine pollution incident. The abandoned fuel posed a risk to the marine environment, and its recovery averted that threat.
The intervention contributed to maritime navigation safety, prevented a potential marine pollution situation, and constrained the capacity of the elements operating that vessel.
The action also reduced the operational capability of the suspect vessel, which likely relied on the fuel for extended illicit activities at sea.

The participation of the UCCF in Spain Indalo 2026 reinforces Portugal's commitment to protecting the European Union's external maritime borders. The operation highlights the close cooperation between Portuguese and Spanish authorities under the Frontex framework. The GNR stressed that the mission strengthens the fight against cross-border crime and the preservation of the marine environment, in line with joint European efforts.
The Bojador has been deployed in Spain since the beginning of the year, and this incident marks one of the tangible results of that ongoing collaboration.
