Greek minister allocates €13.8m for Peloponnese water projects as total reaches over €66m
Minister Stavros Papastavrou signed six new drinking water projects in the Peloponnese worth €13.8 million on July 8, 2026, as part of a wider push that has seen over €66 million allocated to 61 projects across 31 municipalities in recent weeks.
Signing event in Tripoli
On July 8, 2026, Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou signed a decision in Tripoli to include five municipalities and their water‑sewage enterprises in the Peloponnese in the ministry’s “Interventions for drinking water supply and water management” programme. The event gathered regional and local officials, including Peloponnese Regional Governor Dimitrios Ptochos, several MPs, and the mayors of Argos‑Mycenae, Ermionida, Monemvasia, Messini and Kalamata.
Project scope and budget
The six projects, budgeted at €13,797,408, will fund water supply to municipal units, modernisation of supply systems, replacement of outdated network sections, and supplementary works to combat water scarcity. These interventions target chronic deficiencies that affect drinking‑water availability, public health and drought resilience.
For us, the unobstructed, affordable, safe access of every Greek citizen to water is not only an obligation of the State, it is a non‑negotiable national priority. Because water, the most valuable public good, is in reality the foundation of life and social cohesion. We therefore must protect it, not waste it, manage it responsibly and essentially ensure it for future generations. I am particularly pleased that today the second cycle of funding from the Ministry of Environment and Energy is completed with six projects with a budget of approximately 14 million euros in five municipalities of the Peloponnese.
A nationwide €66‑million push
Today’s signing closes the second cycle of a multi‑phase initiative. The ministry has now allocated more than €66 million to 61 projects in 31 municipalities over recent weeks. Last week, Papastavrou had signed inclusion decisions for municipalities in Central Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, Central Greece, Eastern Macedonia, and for 10 projects in 9 island municipalities. The minister confirmed that a third cycle of funding will be launched shortly.
Legislative framework for water
Papastavrou tied the investment to an upcoming legislative push. The National Water Strategy is already under public consultation, and a draft law will be released for consultation in the coming days. It will, for the first time, try to tackle the fragmentation of Greece’s water management, which currently involves 735 different bodies. “This leads to great inefficiency, especially in areas where water is important not only for water supply but also for irrigation,” he said, calling for holistic management that also covers sewage and wastewater.
