Tragic End to Rescue Attempt at Romanian Air Base: Captain Octavian Palferenț Dies

A Romanian military pilot, Captain Octavian Palferenț, died on March 10, 2026, following a tragic attempt to rescue a dog that had fallen into a retention basin. The thirty-year-old officer served daily at the 71st Air Base named after General Emanuil Ionescu in Câmpia Turzii, located in Cluj County. However, the tragic incident occurred on the premises of the 86th Air Base named after Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorniță in the town of Borcea, in Călărași County. The captain was there as part of his official duties related to a mission assignment. The circumstances of the event indicate the pilot's immediate reaction, who without hesitation jumped into the water basin to pull out the drowning dog. Despite the rescue attempt, the man himself found in mortal danger and was unable to get back to the surface on his own. He was eventually pulled from the water by a colleague who noticed the dramatic situation and rushed to help. Emergency medical rescue teams SMURD and an ambulance were immediately called to the scene, which undertook intensive rescue operations. Resuscitation performed by qualified medical personnel lasted a long time but did not bring the expected result.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense officially confirmed the officer's death and conveyed condolences to his family in an official statement. The ministry emphasized that the loss of the young pilot is a great tragedy for the entire armed forces, especially for the unit in Câmpia Turzii. The Romanian Air Force in recent years has placed great emphasis on modernizing air bases, including the units in Borcea and Câmpia Turzii, which are crucial for the security of NATO's eastern flank. The base in Borcea has served for years as a main operational point for modern multi-role aircraft, and pilots stationed there undergo rigorous training.
