German court hands down harsh prison sentences for brutal homophobic attack in Augsburg. Repeat offender convicted

On March 12, 2026, the Augsburg District Court sentenced four men to unconditional prison terms for a brutal homophobic attack. The main defendant, 23-year-old Halid S., received a sentence of 4 years and 6 months in prison for severely beating a pair of homosexual men in the city center. The other three perpetrators received sentences ranging from 3 years and 3 months to 4 years and 6 months imprisonment. A fifth defendant, who according to investigators did not directly participate in the fight, was acquitted by the panel of judges. The verdict came exactly one year after the events that took place on Maximilianstraße in Augsburg.

The court found that the perpetrators' motive was hatred towards people of a different sexual orientation, which influenced the severity of the sentences. In its closing argument, the prosecution demanded a higher sentence of 6 years in prison for Halid S. and the application of preventive detention. However, the court rejected the request for post-sentence isolation, finding that in this case not all statutory prerequisites for its application were met. The convicted men are currently between 23 and 25 years old.

The figure of Halid S. is well known to the public in Bavaria due to his criminal past and involvement in a high-profile trial from several years ago. In December 2019, at the age of 17, he delivered a fatal blow to a firefighter on Königsplatz in Augsburg, for which he was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. The 2019 tragedy on Königsplatz sparked a nationwide debate in Germany about youth violence and public safety. Halid S. was convicted at that time for bodily harm resulting in death, and the trial took place before a juvenile chamber. The current sentence concerns events from March 2025, when the defendants attacked a gay couple in a popular part of Augsburg, once again putting the city in the media spotlight in the context of hate crimes.
