Google Maps' biggest update in a decade: Gemini becomes a personal travel assistant

Google announced on Thursday the rollout of the biggest update to its navigation platform in a decade, integrating Gemini directly into Google Maps. This fundamental technological change aims to transform the traditional route-planning tool into an advanced assistant powered by generative artificial intelligence. According to the company's official statements, the system will no longer just display points on a map but will begin to understand complex user intentions expressed in natural language. Google Maps debuted in 2005 as a desktop service and arrived on mobile devices three years later with the launch of the Android system. Over the last two decades, the platform has evolved from simple city maps to a comprehensive system containing satellite imagery, Street View, and real-time traffic information. The last similarly deep architectural overhaul of the application occurred about ten years ago when Google began placing greater emphasis on personalization and community features.

A key element of the update is the Ask Maps feature, which enables a conversational dialogue with the app to plan a trip or find specific locations. Users can now ask multi-threaded questions, for example, about places equipped with phone chargers where there are currently no lines. The system personalizes responses, taking into account the user's previous search history and their list of saved places. This is intended to make Google Maps more intuitive and better suited to the individual preferences of each driver or pedestrian.

In addition to the analytical layer, Google has completely rebuilt the visual experience by introducing Immersive Navigation. The new mode offers a detailed 3D view of buildings, overpasses, and terrain, which is meant to make orientation easier in complex traffic interchanges.
