Within a few days, the world watched the announcement of a truce in the Persian Gulf, followed by its abrupt end and the announcement of a naval blockade. At the same time, the Easter ceasefire in Ukraine drowned in thousands of mutual accusations.

The Illusion of De-escalation. In one week, diplomacy offers a truce; in the next, the navy prepares a blockade. This is not a contradiction, but a new norm.

These events unmask the brutal logic of modern conflicts: truces and agreements have ceased to be ends in themselves and have become merely tactical tools in a continuous game for advantage.

The ceasefire announced on April 7 between the USA and Iran was supposed to last two weeks. It ended after five days when, on April 12, President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, the 32-hour Easter truce in Ukraine collapsed within hours of taking effect. The Clock is Ticking: From Agreement to Confrontation. The agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, negotiated with the participation of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was fragile from the start. Washington conditioned it on the „FULL, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING” of the strait, while Tehran confirmed security guarantees, but under the supervision of its own armed forces.

The first ships, the Greek bulk carrier NJ Earth and the Liberian-flagged Daytona Beach, managed to cross the strait. Asian markets reacted with optimism, and oil prices fell. It was a brief moment of relief.

21 — hoursThat is how long the talks in Islamabad lasted, which were intended to forge the truce into a lasting agreement. The American delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, left Pakistan without a result. The main obstacle proved to be Iran's refusal to abandon its nuclear program.

Donald Trump's response was an immediate naval blockade. On the Truth Social platform, he announced that the US Navy would stop all ships and destroy Iranian mines. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded with a video showing vessels in their crosshairs.

In this way, the two-week truce became merely a short prelude to escalation. The pause did not serve to build trust but revealed fundamental differences: the USA's 15-point plan demanded restrictions on Iranian ballistic missiles, while Tehran's 10-point proposal omitted the issue entirely.

The conflict, known as Operation Epic Fury, began on February 28, 2026, with an attack by the USA and Israel, in which Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed. He was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei. The direct talks in Islamabad were the first at such a high level since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.The Truce as a Battlefield. The war in Ukraine provides an even more literal example of the instrumentalization of a truce. The 32-hour ceasefire for Orthodox Easter, announced by Vladimir Putin and accepted by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, became the backdrop for a statistical bidding war over violations.

By 7:00 AM on Sunday, the General Staff of Ukraine had registered 2,299 violations by Russian forces, including 479 artillery shellings and 1,045 FPV drone strikes. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense of Russia accused Ukraine of 1,971 violations, including 1,329 FPV drone attacks.

Reported Easter Truce Violations (2026): Ukraine (acc. to Russia): 1971, Russia (acc. to Ukraine): 2299Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated clearly that fighting would resume and that lasting peace would only occur after Russia's goals were achieved. He added that Russian forces still need to seize control of the remaining 17–18% of the Donetsk region.

The relative calm mentioned by Lt. Col. Vasyl Kobziak allowed soldiers of the 33rd Mechanized Brigade to attend a field mass. However, even this humanitarian dimension was overshadowed by reports of casualties on both sides. The truce did not stop the war; it only changed its metric to the number of mutual accusations. The logic of the tactical pause extends beyond active conflict zones, infecting diplomacy as well. Great Britain's suspension of the return of the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius is the best evidence of this.

The agreement, which was supposed to end a colonial-era dispute and complied with a 2019 ruling by the International Court of Justice, was „deeply frozen.” The reason: a lack of support from President Donald Trump, who called the deal „a great stupidity.”

For Washington, the strategic value of the military base on Diego Garcia, crucial in operations against Iran, outweighed the arrangements of an ally and international law. As former Foreign Office official Simon McDonald noted, the USA has joined Russia and China in „ignoring international law.”

For Mauritius, this means a continued legal battle. For the indigenous inhabitants of Chagos, displaced in the 1960s and 70s, it is another disappointment. A deal worth £3.4 billion, guaranteeing a 99-year lease of the base, turned out to be worth less than a unilateral decision made in the White House.

While some may argue that even momentary breaks in fighting have value, these examples show otherwise. Short-term benefits, like a few ships passing through Hormuz or an Easter mass at the front, are illusory when the fundamental goals of the parties remain hostile and irreconcilable.

These pauses do not build bridges. They serve to assess the enemy's strength, regroup one's own forces, and prepare the next strike – military or diplomatic. „This is the good news. The bad news is that we did not reach an agreement.” — JD Vance These words, spoken after the failure of the talks in Islamabad, perfectly capture the nature of this game.

Diplomacy is not dead. It has simply been drafted into the army.

Perspektywy mediów: The ceasefire is a cynical game of great powers, ignoring civilian suffering and international law. Treating agreements as tactical tools undermines trust and makes building lasting peace more difficult. Decisive actions, such as a naval blockade, are necessary when negotiations with hostile regimes fail. National security and strategic interests must take precedence over fragile, non-binding agreements.
