The first day of meteorological spring brought a sudden warming, which according to forecasts will continue in the coming days. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management forecasts temperatures reaching up to 14 degrees Celsius, which favors outdoor activity. Despite the sunny weather, services warn of local flooding and river surges caused by rapid melting of the remaining snow cover in mountain and foothill regions.
Forecasted Temperature Rise
In the coming days, thermometers in Poland will show from 11 to 14 degrees Celsius, initiating a period of stable, spring-like weather.
Flood Threat and Snowmelt
Services warn of river surges and local flooding resulting from rapid snowmelt in the mountains.
Start of the Tourist Season
The first crocuses and sunny weather have attracted thousands of people to mountain resorts and seaside towns.
The beginning of March 2026 brought a clear change in weather, inaugurating a period referred to by forecasters as meteorological spring. The latest forecasts indicate that Poland is under the influence of warm air masses that have displaced the frosty winter. Temperatures in many regions of the country have exceeded the 10-degree barrier, and in the coming days, thermometers are expected to show up to 14 degrees Celsius. Although days are becoming warmer and sunnier, nights remain cool, with local frosts, which is characteristic of the transitional period. The sudden warming has sparked a revival in local tourism and the recreation sector. Crowds of walkers have appeared on the seaside beaches in Stegna and on Jasne Błonia in Szczecin. In Muszyna, the first crocuses have already been noted, attracting crowds of nature enthusiasts. Fans of cold-water swimming also remain active; despite the rising air temperature, enthusiasts of winter swimming are still taking advantage of the low water temperatures in the Baltic Sea and reservoirs such as Pogoria. Meanwhile, in the Tatra Mountains, despite the dwindling snow, ski slopes still offer good conditions for skiers, although the thaw is becoming increasingly noticeable. Historically, March in Poland is the month with the greatest variability in weather conditions, which is reflected in the folk saying "March is like a pot," describing rapid transitions from snowfall to almost summer temperatures. The weather situation, however, brings specific hydrological threats. Rapid snowmelt has already triggered dozens of rescue service interventions. IMGW has issued warnings regarding possible exceedance of alarm levels in the river basins of southern Poland. Experts point out that despite the current moisture, January 2026 was recorded as exceptionally dry, which could have negative effects on agriculture later in the growing season. In the shadow of weather reports, media also remind of the approaching Easter, which this year falls exceptionally early, already in mid-March.
Perspektywy mediów: Liberal and ecological media place greater emphasis on the connection between anomalously high temperatures and global warming and the record drought from January. Local and conservative portals focus on recreational aspects, the tradition of winter swimming, and preparations for the early Easter holidays.
