A court in Nairobi has brought charges against a Kenyan citizen accused of human trafficking and illegal recruitment of young men into the Russian army. Festus Omwamba allegedly lured victims with promises of work in agriculture or security, only to eventually send them to the front line as cannon fodder. The scandal erupts as Kyiv warns that over 1,700 mercenaries from the African continent are currently fighting in the ranks of the aggressor.

Diplomacy of Ghana and South Africa
African governments are intervening in Kyiv and Moscow regarding the release and return of their citizens.
Kenyan authorities have taken decisive action against a network involved in the illegal recruitment of citizens to participate in the war in Ukraine on the side of the Russian Federation. Festus Omwamba, considered a key figure in this practice, appeared before a court in Nairobi. The prosecution accuses him of human trafficking and misleading young men who were promised safe work and high earnings in Russia, while in reality they were subjected to forced mobilization into combat units. Human trafficking for the purpose of participation in an armed conflict constitutes one of the most serious charges in the Kenyan legal system. The Omwamba case sheds light on the broader problem of Moscow exploiting the difficult economic situation in African countries. According to Ukrainian intelligence reports, Russia has already recruited over 1,700 people from Africa using the mechanism of fake job offers. Victims are often stripped of their documents upon arrival in Russia and forced to sign military contracts whose contents they do not understand. This situation resembles practices from the Cold War era, when superpowers instrumentally used citizens of Third World countries in proxy conflicts, often luring them with ideology or material benefits. The situation has become the subject of diplomatic interventions at the highest level. A minister from Ghana traveled to Kyiv to personally negotiate the release of his citizens taken prisoner during the fighting. Meanwhile, the Republic of South Africa announced success in bringing 11 men who fell victim to a similar deception back to the country. They were „trapped” in Russian military structures, and only coordinated actions by the government in Pretoria allowed for their safe return. „South Africa will not rest until every citizen lured into this war returns home safely.” — Representative of the South African government The investigation in Kenya concerns a group of up to a thousand people, indicating the enormous scale of the operation conducted by Russian services and their local collaborators on the African continent. Cassation of previous lenient sentences for recruiters rarely occurs, as Kenyan courts are tightening their jurisprudence in matters concerning national security.
