The past weekend on Polish roads, especially in the western and southern parts of the country, was marked by tragic accidents and difficult weather conditions. The most serious incident occurred on the S3 expressway near Głogów, where a pile-up involving seven vehicles claimed one life. The situation was worsened by sudden thaws in Greater Poland and black ice in Lower Silesia, leading to numerous collisions and local flooding of national routes.
Fatal pile-up near Głogów
A collision of seven vehicles on the S3 route claimed one fatality and caused a multi-hour paralysis of the route towards Zielona Góra.
Thaws paralyze Greater Poland
Thaw waters flooded key sections of national roads, including route no. 10, forcing fire department intervention and shuttle service.
Water supply crisis in Wrocław
A serious failure of the main on Traugutta Street and planned repairs are causing massive disruptions in city communication and shortages in water supplies.
The most tragic point of the weekend's events was the pile-up on the S3 route at the Głogów Południe junction, which occurred on Saturday morning. The incident involved five passenger cars and two trucks. Although initial reports spoke of five injured, the Wrocław branch of GDDKiA confirmed the death of one of the accident participants. The situation in Lower Silesia was also critical due to black ice – on provincial road 364 near Lwówek Śląski, three accidents occurred in short intervals, and on the A4 motorway, a van driver crashed into barriers after failing to adjust speed to difficult road conditions. Sunday brought a change in threats: sudden thaws began to flood roads in Greater Poland. A particularly difficult situation occurred on national road no. 10 near Stara Łubianka, where the fire department had to implement a shuttle service due to the roadway being flooded. Problems also did not bypass Lesser Poland, where four cars collided on national road no. 94 in the village of Kolonia. Simultaneously in Wrocław, there was a cumulation of infrastructure difficulties – in addition to planned repairs on Gajowicka Street and the Sępolno loop, services were battling a massive water main failure on Traugutta Street, where a pipe burst from underneath caused the roadway to be washed out. Polish national roads numbered 10 and 11 have for years been among the most heavily trafficked arteries in western Poland, and their modernization to expressway standards is a key element of the road traffic safety strategy implemented since the beginning of the 21st century.„Patryk Nowak informuje o śmierci jednego z poszkodowanych w wypadku na 253. kilometrze drogi S3.” (Patryk Nowak informs about the death of one of the victims in the accident at the 253rd kilometer of the S3 road.) — Patryk Nowak7 — vehicles participated in the fatal pile-up on the S3 Against the backdrop of these events, local government officials from the Leszno and Głogów region undertook a joint initiative to transform national road no. 12 into an express route. In their opinion, the lack of a safe connector between the S3 and S5 roads realistically contributes to an increase in the number of tragic incidents. Meanwhile, residents of Wrocław are preparing for a difficult week – MPWiK announced numerous power and water outages, which is a direct consequence of both planned modernizations and emergency repairs to the old transmission network in the city center. Water supply systems in large Polish cities, such as Wrocław, largely rely on infrastructure laid down in the post-war period, which, with sudden temperature fluctuations, leads to frequent failures of outdated cellulose-cement and cast iron mains.
Perspektywy mediów: Liberal-leaning media place greater emphasis on neglect in urban infrastructure and the need for modern investments in public transport. Conservative media emphasize the importance of driver caution and the efficiency of emergency services in crisis situations.
