Rescue services in Poland and France are monitoring rapidly rising river levels due to the thaw. Seven icebreakers are operating on the Włocławek Reservoir to prevent dangerous ice jams, while PSP and OSP officers are controlling the situation on the Wkra River. Meanwhile, analysts warn drivers of another wave of fuel price hikes hitting gas stations starting March 2.

The turn of February and March 2026 brings serious hydrological and economic challenges. In Poland, a rapid thaw has caused ice accumulation, posing a real threat to the safety of riverside communities. The most difficult situation is on the Włocławek Reservoir and the Wkra River, where units of the PSP and local volunteers are stationed. Firefighters are urging residents to refrain from walking on the ice and not to approach the jams, which could be broken by the water current at any moment. Simultaneously in France, the government is grappling with the effects of a flood wave that has affected hundreds of municipalities. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that 270 new towns have applied to be recognized as areas under a state of natural disaster. An orange weather alert remains in effect in three departments of the country, forcing full readiness of rescue and civil services in the face of the impending swelling of further watercourses. Ice jams are a cyclical phenomenon, particularly dangerous in the Vistula River basin, where in 1982 they led to a catastrophic flood in the Płock region. The situation in agriculture after the thaw remains uncertain. Experts point to the problem of excess water in the fields, which could lead to the suffocation of winter crops. Meanwhile, the mood in the fuel markets is minor – from March 2, diesel and 95-octane gasoline prices are set to rise again. According to forecasts from the e-petrol.pl portal, diesel has already broken the psychological barrier, and the coming days will bring increases of a few groszy per liter due to the situation on global markets. „Premier ostrzegał, że sytuacja geopolityczna na Bliskim Wschodzie może wpłynąć na płynność ruchu lotniczego.” (The Prime Minister warned that the geopolitical situation in the Middle East could affect air traffic fluidity.) — Sławomir Sikorski In the background of these events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to provide support to Polish citizens who, due to flight suspensions, are stranded at airports in the Middle East, further complicating the picture of destabilization at the intersection of international logistics and regional security.
