Poland is grappling with the severe impacts of a sudden thaw. The water level of the Wkra River surged dramatically after an ice jam formed near the town of Błędowo, flooding dozens of properties. Simultaneously, a wave of African warmth is approaching the country, potentially bringing temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius this weekend. However, meteorologists warn of dangerous hydrological phenomena and a rapid return of frost in early March.
Flood crisis on the Wkra River
An ice jam in Błędowo caused flooding of over 20 properties, prompting intervention from the Minister of Internal Affairs.
Record-breaking weekend warming
Air from Africa is flowing into Poland, with thermometers potentially showing locally over 20 degrees Celsius.
Risk of winter's return
Weather models predict a sharp cooling and frosts immediately after the end of February.
The hydrological situation in the Wkra River basin has become critical after a sudden warming caused the ice cover to break up. A massive ice jam formed in the town of Błędowo in Masovia, blocking the free flow of water. Consequently, the river overflowed its banks, flooding at least 24 properties and requiring intervention from numerous firefighting units. The Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, announced the establishment of a crisis staff and assured that the situation is being monitored, with efforts focused on clearing the river channel. Ice jams are among the most dangerous hydrological phenomena in Poland, particularly hazardous on lowland rivers with gentle gradients, where dammed water can lead to catastrophic ice-jam floods within hours. At the same time, Poland is under the influence of an exceptionally warm air mass of tropical origin. Thermometers in Poznań and Gorzów Wielkopolski already show temperatures in the teens, and forecasts for the coming weekend predict temperatures rising to as high as 20 degrees Celsius in the western part of the country. However, IMGW meteorologists have issued numerous warnings regarding snowmelt and strong winds. The sudden thaw poses a particular threat in the Vistula Fens (Żuławy Wiślane) and the Słupsk County, where firefighters have already intervened dozens of times to drain flooded basements and roads. 24 — properties were flooded as a result of the ice jam on the Wkra Despite the almost summer-like weather in the coming days, meteorologists warn of a radical trend reversal. After March 1st, Arctic air is expected to sweep over Central Europe, bringing severe frost and snowfall. This weather instability not only affects residents' comfort but also raises concerns among farmers about the condition of winter crops, which, after being stimulated into vegetation too early, could be destroyed by the return of winter. Medical experts additionally remind of increased tick activity, for which the mild winter and current warmth create ideal living conditions.
