84-year-old woman drove car from passenger seat, causing fatal accident in parking lot

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, a road accident with unusual and tragic circumstances occurred in the parking lot of a shopping center in the town of Kressbronn am Bodensee in southern Germany. According to witness accounts and police findings, an 84-year-old woman was driving a passenger car, an Opel, from the passenger seat. Her 86-year-old husband was occupying the driver's seat at the time, but he was not in control of the vehicle. The elderly woman suddenly and most likely accidentally pressed the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to lurch forward with great force. Officers are intensively questioning witnesses of the incident to reconstruct as accurately as possible the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. Initial information from investigators indicates that a serious error in vehicle operation occurred on the part of the elderly woman. The investigation aims to clarify whether health condition, possible mobility limitations, or other factors could have influenced her behavior. This accident has drawn attention to the issue of assessing driving ability among elderly people, although in this specific case the main problem was the illegal and dangerous use of the car from the wrong seat.
