A series of dangerous road incidents occurred on key traffic arteries in the Frankfurt am Main region. On the A67 motorway near Viernheim, two related collisions involving six vehicles resulted in one person being seriously injured. Meanwhile, on the A5 route, a pile-up led to a temporary traffic paralysis and minor injuries to two road users.

Serious Injuries on A67

In the accident near Viernheim, one person was injured and had to be cut out of the vehicle by firefighters using hydraulic tools.

Six-Car Pile-up

On the A5 motorway near Frankfurt, a chain collision of 6 cars occurred, caused by unsuccessful braking for a traffic jam.

Traffic Paralysis

Both motorways were temporarily completely closed, causing multi-kilometer traffic jams in the Hesse region.

In mid-February, a series of dangerous road incidents occurred in Germany, particularly in southern Hesse. On the motorway A67 near Viernheim, two consecutive collisions occurred, involving a total of six vehicles. According to police findings, the initial accident involving two cars driven by a 24-year-old and a 20-year-old triggered a chain reaction. Rescue services had to use specialized equipment to free one of the drivers who was trapped in the wrecked car. As a result of this incident, one person sustained serious injuries, and two others were slightly injured. The southbound carriageway was temporarily completely blocked. Almost simultaneously, though at a different point in the road network, an incident occurred on the A5 motorway between the Bad Homburg and Nordwestkreuz junctions. The cause was a failure to exercise caution and not braking in time for traffic jams, leading to a collision also involving six cars. In this case, the consequences were less tragic in terms of bodily injuries – two people sustained minor injuries – however, the traffic disruptions were severe for thousands of drivers traveling towards Frankfurt. Police are appealing for extra caution when approaching forming traffic jams, which is the most common cause of pile-ups in this region. The German motorways are among the most heavily trafficked transport routes in Europe, and the Frankfurt am Main region constitutes a key transport hub (Frankfurter Kreuz), through which over 300,000 vehicles pass daily.Road services emphasize that rescue operations on motorways are hampered by drivers in traffic jams failing to form so-called rescue lanes. In both described cases, full closure of the routes was necessary for the landing of rescue helicopters and the clearing of wrecks. Material damage was preliminarily estimated at tens of thousands of euros. Police in Viernheim are continuing proceedings to precisely determine the course of events on the A67.
