Poland on the brink of March is experiencing a sudden warming, bringing temperatures reminiscent of full spring. However, forecasters are warning of an influx of Saharan dust cloud, which may cause the so-called 'blood rain' phenomenon. Despite high daytime temperatures, frosts persist at night, and IMGW has issued hydrological warnings due to river swelling at six gauging stations in the country.

Saharan dust over Poland

A cloud of sand from Africa is approaching the country, which will cause hazy skies and dirty rainfall, dangerous for allergy sufferers.

Exceeded river levels

IMGW reports exceedance of alarm levels on six rivers despite high daily temperatures.

Spring weather and frosts

Days bring temperatures up to 20 degrees, but nights still see drops below zero, threatening vegetation.

The beginning of March 2026 brings a significant warming to Poland and most Western European countries, resulting from an anticyclonic block. In many regions of the country, including Łódź and southern Poland, temperatures reaching over ten degrees Celsius have been recorded, prompting nature to accelerate vegetation. In the Tatra Mountains, specifically in the Chochołowska Valley, the first crocuses have already been observed, which traditionally heralds the arrival of spring. Meteorologists indicate that March may turn out to be one of the driest months in the history of measurements, raising concerns among farmers and hydrologists analyzing inland water levels. Simultaneously with the warming, a mass of air from North Africa is approaching Europe, carrying fine desert sand particles. The dust cloud from the Sahara will reach Poland in the middle of the week, which will result in hazy skies and a specific, yellowish color of atmospheric precipitation, referred to as 'blood rain'. Medical experts appeal to people with respiratory problems to exercise caution, as the dust can exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms. This phenomenon also entails the need for more frequent washing of vehicles and building facades, where fine sand settles. The phenomenon of Saharan dust transport over Central Europe occurs regularly when strong low-pressure systems over the Atlantic and North Africa force southern air circulation in the upper layers of the troposphere. The hydrological situation remains tense despite the lack of intense rainfall in some regions. IMGW has issued three-level warnings, informing about the exceedance of alarm levels on six rivers. This is a consequence of earlier thaws and water runoff from higher areas. Although thermometers show values above 15 degrees during the day, nights remain cool, with temperatures dropping below zero, which creates a risk of frosts. In the long-term perspective, forecasters do not rule out a return of winter, warning against excessive optimism and premature uncovering of sensitive horticultural crops. „Un épisode de réchauffement climatique est possible à partir de mai sous l'effet d'El Niño selon l'ONU” (A global warming episode is possible from May under the effect of El Niño according to the UN) — UN (WMO) Statement At the global level, climatologists' eyes are turned to the phenomenon of El Niño. After a period of dominance of the cool phase La Niña, models indicate a possible transition to a neutral state, and then a return of the hot phase even before summer 2026. This could mean a record-hot summer and extreme weather phenomena on a planetary scale, including in Europe, which is increasingly feeling the effects of anthropogenic climate change and ocean warming.
