Local Government Initiative

Municipal leaders are lobbying for the reconstruction of DK 12 on the Głogów-Leszno route to expressway standards.

The tragic pileup occurred on Saturday, February 21, after 9:00 AM on the S3 expressway. At the height of the Głogów Południe junction towards Zielona Góra, a total of seven vehicles collided. The incident involved five passenger cars and two trucks. The rescue situation was extremely complicated because, according to fire department reports, there were two cumulative accidents. Initially, three cars collided, and when one driver stopped to help the victims, they were hit by other vehicles. The toll of the incident changed drastically throughout the day. Although initial reports mentioned only injuries, after 3:30 PM, representatives of the Wrocław branch of GDDKiA officially confirmed the death of one of the victims. Four other people sustained injuries, with the condition of three described as serious. The cause of the tragedy was extremely dangerous black ice, which turned the roads of Lower Silesia and Lubusz into an "ice rink." Similar incidents were recorded on the S8 route near Oleśnica and on national road no. 92. The S3 expressway is one of the most important transport corridors in western Poland, connecting the Baltic coast with the Czech border. Due to the high share of heavy transport in this region, any pileup in winter conditions carries an extremely high risk of fatalities. In the shadow of current events, local government officials from the region took the initiative to improve safety on neighboring roads. Representatives of cities and municipalities located along DK 12 met in Leszno to discuss a plan to upgrade this route to an expressway. This investment aims to create a safe link between the S3 and S5 motorways, which could relieve local roads and reduce the number of accidents during periods of critical weather conditions. „Patryk Nowak z wrocławskiego oddziału GDDKiA informuje o śmierci jednego z poszkodowanych w wypadku, do którego doszło w sobotę na 253. kilometrze drogi S3.” (Patryk Nowak from the Wrocław branch of GDDKiA reports the death of one of the victims in the accident that occurred on Saturday at the 253rd kilometer of the S3 road.) — Patryk Nowak
